Rough idle in neutral-goe away when clutch engaged

Love my 2012 Monster 796!

Only 165 miles on her and she started making a new sound when I shifted her into neutral and released the clutch.

It was almost as if she didn't go fully into neutral. I tried putting her into gear and no matter what I tried she still doesn't have a smooth idle in neutral-only when the clutch is fully engaged. The RPMs don't change at all, she just doesn't idle as smoothly as when the clutch is engaged fully.

Any ideas if this is normal or should I be concerned? I've got nearly 400 miles until my first service.

A change in noise from having the lever pulled to not is normal.

If you have the lever pulled in, the plates separate and the driven plates, hub etc will eventually spin down. With the bike in N, with the lever out, more parts are moving and will yield a different tone. This is most easily heard of a dry clutch bike, with an open cover. Lever in, there's a light jingle. Lever out in neutral you get the jingle and a regular ticking or clacking noise that's a good bit louder.

The sounds a bit blown out in this clip, but he starts it with the bike in N, lever out - and you can hear that distinct clicking. At 0:25 and about 0:30 he's pulling the the lever - note the distinct change in noise

So a change in noise is normal. But excessive noise wouldn't be.

You say it doesn't idle smoothly - but then you say the RPMs don't change which contradicts the previous. If it wasn't idling smoothly the RMPs would change, become irregular, surge etc.

Your bike is still well within the break-in period, so it will have some changes in characteristics as parts take their final set.

First thing I'd do is try to find a local with the same clutch - 696 or 796 and some more miles to have a listen to both bikes for a direct comparison. If you're real gun shy, you could have it to a shop - but you may find you're chasing a non existant trouble.
