A member of the South Bay Riders forum (SBR) was recently run over at slow speed by a semi truck in Idaho. In addition to suffering broken bones in her pelvic area, she also sustained severe "degloving" below the waist which will require skin grafts and extensive hospitalization.
From what I can gather through the reports on SBR, the degloving (a medical term for the skin being stripped off) was caused by her riding pants being pulled off in the process of being run over. This in turn exposed her skin to subsequent "abrasion" (I am putting it mildly for the squeemish) as she was dragged 20 feet on the pavement.
A nurse at the hospital, who is a rider, commented that the degloving might have been prevented if her riding pants had been zipped to her riding jacket.
My summer perforated leather riding jacket and pants are a matched set and can be zipped together, although I have never done so. Looking at them, the zipper runs across the waist at the back and is only about 10 inches long. I question whether this short section would be sufficient to hold the jacket and pants together in a serious accident.
My recent accident prevents me from riding this summer, but I am looking ahead to next year. I am seriously considering converting to one piece riding suits for both warm and cold weather riding. There are several textile single piece riding suits available for cool/cold weather riding with Aerostitch probably being the best known brand.
For warm weather riding, I am interested in a one peice, perforated leather riding suit. I have been told that these suits are built for the track and are not comfortable for long distance, all day touring; nor do they contain the many pockets that us ST types like.
So (finally) here is my questoin for the ST clubhouse: is there a one piece, perforated leather riding suit out there that is suitable for sport touring? I don't need knee sliders and would just as soon stay away from the Power Rangers look. Pockets for a cell phone, wallet, and a p&s camera would be nice. It must be comfortable for the length of my usual touring day, which is 300-450 miles spread out over 8-10 hours.
