Early Supersport half fairing mounting hardware

I purchased my first Ducati in 1993, a brand new 93 Supersport. I also owned a 95 900SS SP before moving to a 916, which I raced for several seasons in AFM, and which I still own. I always regretted selling the 2 valve machine and fixed that mistake by buying a used white frame (92) example about 7 years ago.

I bought it from he original owner who’d maintained it meticulously and made something of a “Superlight” tribute of it. It came with two sets of fairings, the common full fairing, and the “bikini” (or half fairing) that was commonly associated with the 750SS of the period and later, the “CR” model.

I had that half fairing on it when I bought it, and ran it that way for a while before replacing it with the full fairing. I wanted to go back to the half fairing and have mounted it, but I can’t recall which fairing hardware secures it at the back. I have the posts which I believe mount to the frame but for some reason they seem too long and push the tail end of the fairing out too far, but I am not certain.

Any 750SS or other half fairing Supersport owners out there have a photo or measurement of the length of the posts I’m describing to help me out?

Ciao,

Thank you. I know about not using the bottom mounts….Do you have a photo that shows how the half fairing is attached to this well nut?

Allen head bolt (Red arrow) passes through a countersunk fairing washer (Green arrow) and there's also a thick plastic washer (Blue arrow) that spaces the fairing panel away from the wellnut on the back side of the panel.

Here's a pic of the outer fairing washers. Part number is 84110011B. I have no pic of the inner plastic fairing washers. Info I have says they're no longer available. Could probably get some at the hardware store though.

Thank you. I have those too.....but there is still a part missing which is not the s shaped fastener OddDuck refers to. These fairings were on my Supersport when I bought her, but I can't remember how they were installed at the back. I can't even recall if 900SS frames had a boss to install the half fairing, or if they came with half fairings. The CR wasn't released until 95 (I think) and so the early frames may have been different.

I am still looking for a photo of how the bikini fairing looks installed...especially at the back.

Here are a few pics that I snapped. The lug for the "L" bracket bolt is welded to the backside (facing the engine) of the tube. I don't know if this lug was installed on all frames. Is this what you're looking for?

My 91 did not have anything on the frame to put a 95 CR half fairing, nothing to attach the S shape to. So I made something different out of a electrical conduit clamp painted white which pulled the ends of the fairing right to the frame. I put a strip of thin foam adhesive backed between the fairing and the frame there. It tucks in neatly, closer than the regular CR.

Thank you all for the support. I’ve become “that guy” who‘s got motorcycles in his garage that he never rides and who can’t remember how to maintain them. I’ve always done my own maintenance, repair, and upgrade his machines.

Sadly, the Bay Area cagers are a serious menace and so my riding on public roads has been reduced to ”almost never.” Combined with this 11 year Alfa build, my Ducatis have been “dry docked” and my memory of how to maintain them faded.

I was searching for a photo of my Supersport when I purchased it as it had the “bikini” fairing on it at the time. To answer an earlier question, my “bikini” fairing is the OE Ducati part, which would have been installed on 750ss models.

The original owner of my Supersport was a good wrench and a hot rodder by trade, so he modified it quite a lot, both mechanically and cosmetically. I managed to find some photos of the bike when it had the bikini fairing installed and that helped me understand how he did the mode.

I believe he may have welded the tab in to which the well nut is pressed but maybe it came from Ducati that way. I don’t recall if the factory used the same frames for 750s and 900s, but I’d guess not given that the engines are quite different. I also don’t recall if Ducati so 900SS models with bikini fairings.

In any event, I figured it out. Thank you again.

As I mentioned, the original and former owner was a hot rodder. He had a pinstriper/painter, paint over the original decals. I’ll see if I can capture a close up of them but you can see that they’re hand brushed. I can’t recall the exact process but the original red bodywork was repainted yellow and I assume that new decals were applied, hand painted, and cleared over….but I’m not certain.

Not all of the upgrades were cosmetic. He had high compression pistons and Keihin Flatslides installed, the latter of which I had on my original 900SS and subsequent 900SS SP back in the early 90s. They’re fantastic. It also had Carrozzeria wheels, which, while beautiful, didn’t fit properly and which required extensive machining to make them do so. The owner of the company stopped supporting Ducatis so I sold them and just run the OE wheels.

It also had a Pro Italia “single seat” cowl which didn’t really work well and which I removed.

I really like these decals - very cool. I mean.. they look like decals.. are these over the paint? Or clear coated?

Yes that tab was not oem which means the pait was redone as well. No issues that should work just fine and make for a fast swap between the two types.

As a FYI there was a full and half fairing option pre CR so in 93 you could get either the full or half fairings on your SS both had the same forks and swingarm .

Thanks Ducvet….I thought I remembered there being a half-fairing 900 but when I bought mine in 93 the only models on the showroom floor were full fairing examples.

Not only did he repaint the frame, all the bodywork was repainted as it was originally red. The ony yellow Supersports in 92 were Superlights.
