Start about 2 turns out, but don't adjust them until you've ridden about 5-10 miles , then adjust for highest idle, with no hanging idle . If idle hangs , go ccw 1/2 turn at a time until idle returns nicely. Hanging idle is usually caused by lean condition on these carbs idle circuit
Added explanation: Don't be surprised if the point at which the bike runs well and takes throttle crisply is several turns ccw from seated. These carbs have a wide adjustment range, no need for alarm. Mine are 5 full turns ccw and runs well.
Yea, most mixture screws set stock (on misc Jap bikes) are 2.5 turns out. But I've noticed on my 2002 900ss (fuel injected, not carb) the mixture screws need to be 3.5 or more to get crisp throttle/no hanging idle.
Thought this was weird, so I'm glad to see others confirming this setting here.
Entirely possible, Brad. After having them that far out to run well I went up a jet size, 42.5 from 40. I then had to have them less than a turn and it still didn't run as well as it had with the smaller jets so I reinstalled them . Whatever works, I say. I have no access to a dyno or anyone familiar with these carbs other than helpful folks like you. Seat of the pants mine runs very well .
Well, at least we got a starting point out of it. Go 3 1/2 turns but don't be afraid to screw it further out if necessary. It's all about results.
