This is a pic of my 916sps 1998 model, it has two heavy cables to the
+ positive terminal.
one for the starter/relay/solenoid
one for the reg/rec charge system 40amp large fuse. They are connected to the +positive terminal.
your earth lead is fitted to the -terminal which is grounded at the rear
of the vertical cylinder beside the oil breather.

The No1 cable looks like it should go to the +positive terminal.
but it is very long? it might have been replaced at some time?
you should have a short cable that comes from the starter relay/solenoid
that connects to the +positive terminal all so.
I think No2 should go on to the -negitive terminal not the reg/rec plate bolt
as the reg/rec plate is rubber mounted.

No3 cable fits to the other side of your solenoid
and the other cable from the solenoid fit to the +positive on the battery when you press the start button the little 2pin plug allows the solenoid to work which pulls the heavy current for the starter which is earthed because it is bolted to the engine only one cable going to it.cable No3.
No1 cable as this one is coming from the reg/rec i would not have thought
it would go to earth/ground? as it is a supply?.
This cable should go to the +positive terminal ?.
No2 cable you say is the earth/ground for the reg/rec? so why would it require two ?(if No1 was the reg/rec earth/ground)
This cable should go to the -negative terminal not the reg/rec plate,as the plate is rubber mounted.

This is just how i see it .
