Just curious on how to tell what kind of motor is what....so couple of questions.

1. Does a 999R or S model say " 999R " or " 999S " on the dash when you first turn the key on...or...is the R or S in some other location on the dash ?

2. If you came across a motor in a crate is there a place to look on the motor that will tell you what kind of motor it is ?

On my 749R the stock dash did say 749R when you turned it on.

The SN on the casing of the motor usually gives you the info for determining what motor it is. There is a decipher key online, do a google search.

the xx9 dash can say 999-s or r or 749 -s-r etc by holding the buttons on each side in a certain order.it also cycles through euro or na measurments.engine # is the only way to determine the actual engine type other than dissasembly

you can change the engine size in the middle (749-000) and change the model icon in the lower left

Yes, this is a little known feature with the 749-999 bikes!

Say you bought a plain Jane 749 because you couldn't afford a 749R; just by holding down a few buttons on the display you could turn that 749 into a 749R!

Nobody really knows how this works but apparently the engine is modified in such a way that it ends up being a true 749R engine. Needless to say, this applies to the suspension, frame and all other affected components as well.

The reason this feature is not known to the general public is Ducati would lose money if potential customers knew.

Why pay extra for a 749R when you can buy a plain 749 and turn it into a 749R yourself by pressing the buttons on the display in a certain sequence?

Please don't share this info with others as it would ruin the second-hand market for all 749R owners...
