what is an SP?

a friend just asked me what is an SP. so my question to you all is what is the difference between a SS and a SS-SP?
the bike in question is a 97 900SP. that is all he knew about it.

IMHO the '97 SP is the best of the pre-98 SS bikes. I had one for 30K and never had a problem with it. I mean NEVER. Took it from CT to CO and all around the East. Awesome bike.
