Observation : 40 degrees Fahrenheit, highway speed between 75-85 in 6th gear at around 5500rpm engine temp range from LO(or below 123) to 165+- on the display the entire ride. (50min) The temps on this bike have always been rock steady even below freezing, and in the hot. Even on the track there is some fluctuation but nothing like what I saw today. Temps would change every 3-4 seconds sometimes from 124 to 137 then to LO to 175. Off highway temp went to 206 which is normal for this bike in these temps. Any ideas?

Another possibility is the sensor itself. They are known to fail. Does the SS have two sensors? Some of the engines have one sensor for the temp gauge and the other that feeds the ECU. You could try swapping the leads and see if that display behaves...then you can be more confident that it's a bad sensor.

Sensor had failed. Got a new one from “The boot “ along with a couple new sealing washers and some Shell advance ultra 4 and we are good for Sunday first track day of the season.
