Hello esteemed liSTers

Just returned from a 1800 km round trip with some mates to Phillip
Island for the Oz World SBK races. The ST3 performed magnificantly on
the twisties and highways, especially since I have readjusted the
suspension, added EBC HH disc pads and put on Continental Road Attack
tyres. The ride was one of the best and fastest I've had ever.
Beautiful sunny weather and great racing, especially by Baylis on the
Ducati, as well.

However, when I got nearly home I noticed an unusual noise in the
engine. A cross between an knock and a rattle - sounded a bit like a
fairly worn dry clutch (mine is a wet clutch BTW). Sounded louder on
the right side of the engine.

The bike is under warranty and back at the dealer who is stripping in
down to see what the problem is - possible main bearing. Will let you
know what the mechanic finds.

Has anyone had or heard of engine problems with the ST3?? I love
this bike and this in no way puts me off it, but I'm interested in
gathering a bit of intelligence on known or likely problems etc.

Any advice / Ducati wisdom would be appreciated. .

cheers

I recently posted a thread on an article in Cycle Canada on their "long term" ST3. They too heard something and thought it was a crank bearing as well. In their case, two bolts securing the inner rear fender had dropped out, causing the mysterious rattle. Hope it's that simple for you.

Good luck.

I'd start by looking for a loose bolt or maybe even a small rock rattling around in the engine area somewhere.

Not too worry. My '05 ST3 makes all kind of weird sounds, it's been at it for 8,000mi.. I just put my ear-plugs in and let her rip. It's under warrenty, don't worry, if it's *running good* ride the sucker!
IMHO - Knock, rattle, maybe just bad gas??? It's probably something simple......

Thanks. It turned out to be a defective bearing (not main) - nylon lined high speed bearing on right. 16000 km and some balls came loose. No damage to engine. Being fixed under warranty. Proves that it is a good idea not to ignore funny noises in the engine...:D

Which bearing seized at 1300 miles causing a rebuild?
