Uncorking pipes

When I have wanted to do this to stock BMW pipes, I use a 3/4" or 7/8" holesaw on a extention rod and drill through the flat plate about 18" down in the muffler. Would this approach work on the SC mufflers? I am seriously thinking of trying this on my GT.

I recall someone posting X-Rays of the stock pipes (search I'm sure its here) and concluding that drilling them out wasn't going to be a viable option. Of course that was one person's opinion maybe it will who knows.

.....than spend almost $2000 for a 2 into 1 Termi that might get me 8HP. This is ridiculous. I hope the aftermarket guys put their production facilities in high gear for the Sportclassic line, I think Ducati/Termi has way to much greed going on.
Here is what I find interesting:
The 2 -into- 1 system is about $1,700 (USD) and that includes the ECU and air-box lid. Not a clue what the air-box lid costs but a stock sport classic air-box lid is $120 (USD) retail. The Ducati Performance ECU that comes with this set up is about $1,200 (USD) retail.

I know when you try and built something from separate parts that cost can be a lot more BUT it seems to me that the performance ECU is the largest part of the total cost of the 2 -into- 1 system.

Word has it you can build your own performance ecu by getting a '04 MST ECU and PowerCommander setup. That would run you about $500 + (USD). I am also sure you can NOT buy the exhaust can or header pipes separately.

Blackbirdxx,

Looking at it that way, the DP kit is a smoking deal! It's too bad that I don't like the mufflers that Ducati is selling for the GT.

Has Staintune delivered any of their Sportclassic mufflers? From the looks of the pics on their website they look just like the stock muffler, but hopefully are just straight through and lighter. I have an email into them about the GT, but no word yet.

Yes, drilling out the GT mufflers is going to be extremly difficult due to the bend in the pipe. I wonder if you can attack it from the other end?

Thanks, PhacK

Does anyone know where you can get the 04 multistrada ECU for $500? I looked around and the best price I could find was somewhere around $1,200 to $1,300 (USD) I think.

As far as modifying the stock cans IMO it's alot easier to cut and weld up some small pieces of exhaust pipe to make an adapter for whatever universal silencers you want to use than to try to open up and weld shut those big @$$ stock cans.

I think your looking at the price for a Ducati Performance ECU. I got a quote for a '04 MST ECU of about $225 (USD). Add a PowerCommander for about $350 (USD) and you should be good to go.....

Well after 2 fast and furious days of poking around and surveying the pipes, I've come to the conclusion that it can't be done. I'm not one to give up easily but this design has me stumped. 1st - the cans are double wall construction, that's why the outside never gets very hot, and the paint stays fresh looking. 2nd- I'm sure that I will have to cut BOTH ends to get some of the baffles out. 3rd- all of that effort seems like it won't be fruitful or wise if I ever plan to keep the cans looking anything like the stock appearance. They will get mangled in the process of doing this.

I've gutted my 916 cans, and both of my 900sssp cans in the past. That was nothing more then drilling out the rivets and pulling the guts. On my Paso, I had to cut the front and the back off just as you described, then grind out the inside weld to remove the inner sleeve and baffles. Then I replaced the stock baffle with 9inches of an automotive perforated baffle and welded it to the endcap. It was a chore, but after I had it rewelded up and the new welds ground smooth, I repainted it with (gulp) flat black charcoal stove paint. The end result is a completely stock looking muffler with the sound of a v8 and it weighed in 12 lbs lighter. It takes time and patience, but trust me, you can hear me coming a long way off. On a side note, it revs faster, but the power is up higher in the rev band. This has proved to be well worth the effort.

Get used to my blather... I'm picking up my new Sport on Monday! Woohooo! :D

I recently had some ideas on modding the stock pipes too. I found a set on e-bay with headers. The bike had been dropped and there was a small scuff on the lower exhaust and one on the front header. Definitely usable for experimenting on. But... after picking up the cans and realizing how much they weigh, I have thought better of it and changed my mind. I will be glad to sell for what I have in them.

Anyone interested PM me.

No kidding. What the [email protected]#$ was Ducati thinking with this. I never really minded the look of the stock pipes, though yes they are a bit large, but something this heavy should never have been allowed on this bike.

Check out "Getting more Sound out of Stock GT1000 pipes" it sounds from reading that this may be what your looking for. I two cringe at $1700 for pipes, But boy do they sound kick-ass my friend had them on his Sport 1000 the 2-1 system w/o baffs a bit loud. I thinking of trying the drill bit way.

This is an older thread but since RedRooster has brought it back to life and tied in my more recent one on Getting More Out Of the Stock Pipes, I thought I ought to chime in.

As mentioned in my other thread I am very pleased with the sound of my simple pipe mod. But it is very different from the 'gutting' of older type cans such as is mentioned in earlier posts to this thread and written about in DUC's article “Muffler Coring --All the Sound at Less Than Half the Cost." ( www.duc.bz/MufflerCoring.htm )

That approach keeps the stock exterior of the of the cans but creates internals that are true 'straight throughs' with a perforated tube - the essential design of lovely and very loud "race cans" that are so much a part of recent Ducati lore. An approach, btw, far easier to perform on a cannister type system than on the more finished-style mufflers found on the SportClassics.

My mod as mentioned in the "getting More" thread is simply, as its name suggests, a way of letting a bit more sound out of the stock cans with a minor alteration. They are not nearly as loud as 'straight throughs,' nor do they produce the same visceral thump in the chest that so many of us love but find unsuitable for daily use on the street.
