I realize this is probably a wasted effort but I'm seriously thinking of removing the stock cans, and cutting the weld, removing most, or all of the baffles to try to get some volume out this exhaust. The aftermarket pipes that have proven good so far are Zards, and Termi's both are wallet busters. Until someone comes out with a Conti style replica pipe that looks good and has a reasonable price, I'm saying away from the 24K pipes. Has anyone given thought to this project? Are there any alternative ideas to mangling the stock pipes? If not I'll go ahead with my idea and post the results. There should be a Govt regulation against corking up this motor so it can't be heard a foot away at an idle.
Before I get flamed with "wanna play, gotta pay" I've just spent the last 12 months modding my car, I know what real HP, and all the good stuff costs. I just have a hard time justifying $2000.00+ for a little rumble that's already there, it just needs to be unleashed.

Well, if I can finagle it this weekend, I will try and shoot some X-rays of the stock pipes so I can see their assembly without cutting them up. It might show that it would be easy to open them up, or it might show the only way is to go aftermarket.
Hey Dug,
Do you have access to a parts breakdown of our bikes?? This would be invaluable! I know that some time must pass before the bootleg manuals come out and because our bikes are so new, I didn't think any such documentation existed. Unless of course you are a authorized Ducati dealer. I tried the dealer, and they are in the business of selling Termi's, so that was a dead end.
For Kels reply, yes I'll do it-- but I thought I'd ask if anyone has tried uncorking of the welded pipes first.

Capt.,
You are the Man! That was a great link, I didn't know that Ducati was so helpful with their support. Most companies keep these part numbers and parts breakdowns on DVD's or hard copy manuals. They are hard to get, and usually expensive. I've saved this to my hard drive, and you can bet I'll be using it for the life of the PS1000. My plan is to go ahead and cut the seem in the back with a dremmel tool as you suggested, and then pull the baffles. If I want, (or must) I will buy a pair of stock cans as they become available through this site, or ebay to have in reserve for the pending inspections in California. Unfortunately this stupid state has pending legislation to smog check, and verify noise requirements beginning with the 2006 model year. I really need to move, but my family has been here since the gold rush, and it's very hard to give up on your home state, no matter how ugly things are.
Northern Idaho is looking better every day. North Carolina would be ideal, but 3000 miles from the rest of the family might be to far.
Thanks again,
Tom

Hey Capt. You struck Gold!
That sounds like a huge help, I won't need pictures, only because I spend hours staring at the bike, and I can visualize what you did. I know the fairing is going to be very tough, I've almost resigned myself to taking it off for touring, and putting it on for local rides. As long as the convertibars give plenty of adjustment, I can see this being the only alternative to my varied riding needs. After all, the stock set up is good for 60 miles before I get off to stretch my legs. For the all day rides, I must bring the bars up to a comfortable seating position, so the upper half will come off. 6 screws I think.
That's the best solution I've got, other than buying a second bike for touring. Not!
The convertibars that were on ebay sold for $215.00, I hope they arrive as advertised. It's a big gamble just to save $85.00, however the fellow seemed like a straight shooter, so I'm sure on Wednesday I'll have the bars.
Also, I have the stock pipes removed, and I'm going to cut the cap on the rear tomorrow, pull some baffles out, and weld them back. Another gamble, only this time the stakes are higher.
Thanks again for the great info on the throttle cables, this is going to be a popular idea with PS1000, and Sportclassic owners.

Yeh Capt. I see what you mean. The substantially forward position makes the rider (me) feel like my nose is further forward than the front wheel. I'm looking forward to the convertibars, and the new throttle cables. (they are on order first thing in the morning at Pro Italia)
It's hard to imagine being lighter, and quicker through the corners :) When the PS 1000 is set up properly, which mine is, it feels like a GP bike. Without the 250 HP engine that they have, but the ride is on rails. The fellows at Pro Italia rode my bike, and told me I was close with the set up, but I finished it with 5 clockwise clicks on the front Ohlins. Now it's really just perfect in the corners, and the engine has enough torque to pull me out and get me going again.
Just waiting on Brown Wednesday, and the stock pies to be cored tomorrow.

wa6usa, I got the Xrays of the stock pipes done. I can post them here if you want to see them.
Yes!, My pipes go into surgery tomorrow, an inside pic would be super helpful.
Thanks,
Tom

Hey Dug,
You there?
Could really use the x-ray before I start cutting the cans.
Thanks,
Tom

Well after 2 fast and furious days of poking around and surveying the pipes, I've come to the conclusion that it can't be done. I'm not one to give up easily but this design has me stumped. 1st - the cans are double wall construction, that's why the outside never gets very hot, and the paint stays fresh looking. 2nd- I'm sure that I will have to cut BOTH ends to get some of the baffles out. 3rd- all of that effort seems like it won't be fruitful or wise if I ever plan to keep the cans looking anything like the stock appearance. They will get mangled in the process of doing this.
I guess our pals in Bologna knew that anyone with performance, and sound on their mind wouldn't mind forking over a kilobuck or two for that elusive roar. It certainly has me bummed, I would rather spend $3000 on a supercharger for my car to boost it up to 500+ HP than spend almost $2000 for a 2 into 1 Termi that might get me 8HP. This is ridiculous. I hope the aftermarket guys put their production facilities in high gear for the Sportclassic line, I think Ducati/Termi has way to much greed going on.
