Track Day Check list

565 Views 15 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  BOTT
I could not find a specific track day thread here so I'm going to put this here. Some stolen ideas from a sheet I picked up at a track day, a free Word template and some of my own pictures.

I could not think of everything to put on here so if anybody has some of their own for the list I'll add them. Already I can think of brake fluid, motor oil as missing. Still a work in progress.

If anybody wants the WORD file shoot me a DM and I'll send it over unless there is a spot on the forum to upload files.

You should be able to attach it, look for the little paperclip. This is a really good idea. Hopefully by the end of the year I will be back in shape and be able to do my first track day.

Nice.

I came up with and use something similar after I realized on my way from the hotel to the track I had forgotten the SS's key. On the back of this sheet in big bold letters are my emergency contact's name and phone number.

Tire warmers set temp to at least 170 temp. Usually track temp never exceeds this number.
Excess tire warmer heat moves the oil up and out of the carcass. Greasy ride.
Rewrap the tires after coming in to cool the tire slower.
Tire temp should show a warm rim at the feel.
Tire pressures set right before warmers are pulled off.

Yes, the ignition key - from those of us who learned the hard way or witnessed others doing so (in red on my checklist too).
Here's one I've developed over many a track day.

RE - tire warmers

If you aren't riding in the advanced group, leave the warmers/generator at home. You don't need to run slicks in the novice group.

IMHO. I want to take as little as possible with me to the track.

Your mileage may vary.

Contents may shift/settle in shipping, yadda yadda yadda... but tire warmers are a hassle most track day riders don't need.

But if you ARE going to use them, remember to take them off before heading out for your session. Not kidding. It's happened.

And I think everyone knows someone or has themselves forgotten the ignition key! My riding buddy did it... which made me super paranoid about not repeating it. I bring a spare.

I'm not even a drinker but if you are doing an overnighter there's a lot of time in the camper/tent/hotel between 5pm checkered and 8:00am rider's meeting! LOL

Solid advice. I have tire warmers in there just to make it more generic. I don't have/use them myself. The tire can go way faster than I can even when cold!
While we're on advice re tire warmers, if you Don't use them, be sure to give it at least a lap and a half each new session to get the temps up before hitting your pace, whatever that is. There's the tendency to hit the track on a new session at the pace you were last comfortable at when leaving the track 40 cold minutes prior.

  1. Spare motor
  2. Tires
  3. Bandages and splints

My racing days are over!

I bring one of those cheap large analog wall clock and hang it from the truck so it’s easy to see.

Bring a spotter to help catch the bike, if not keep the momentum going to keep pushing up the ramp. Saw a guy setup his 3 ramps. Took his last time out on the track, lined up a brand new ktm 300 still suited up, and rode it up the ramp. Stopped almost at the top, lost footing [3 ramps] bike falls upside down and still running. Probably hurt the engine running that long, on top of the fairing damage and missed the truck parked next to it.

I watched it all happen like watching a novice squid ride off from a traffic light. WTF was he thinking?
