I have a 02 998 and have recently added a new 50mm half system meant for a 996. I have no ecu. The bike seems fine but I suspect it runs a little rich. So I'm considering a DP ecu in stead of a power commander. Any advice??

Well. I´ve seen DP ECU´s and PC´s run on the 998. The PC´s always had a better power and torque range then the DP ECU´s (at least that I´ve seen).

That makes sense, since your going with a system no designed to be stuck on a 998.
The good thing about PC´s are that they are totally "Yours" to play with. If you later decide to go with a larger airbox or a full system, the PC can handle them aswell.. Also bigger cams or whatever!

Also.. FIM has come out with there new U59 replacment ECU.. This is very sophisticated piece of kit.. letting you not only play with fuel, like the PC, but also with ignition and so on. It´s a bit expensive, but maybe worth a look.
U59 Features

Plug-in equivalent of Weber IAW 59M ECU.
Disables the Immobiliser function for all models. You can use the U59 on a race or track bike without the ignition key, immobiliser aerial, and immobiliser unit.

Supplied pre-mapped for most applications - slipon mufflers, revised cam timing, etc.

Fully mappable for Fuel Map, Rear cylinder Correction Map, Spark Map, Fan Cutins, and Rev Limiter using a new version of our Mapper program (available to dealers)

Can be operated in Road Mode (all side-stand cutouts, starter button, clutch switch etc. functional) or Track Mode (Kill Switch only) so you don't need to wreck your wiring harness to go to the track.

The Dashboard Water Lamp or ECU check lamp can be used as a Programmable Shift Light in addition to the warning function.(Some models only)

Can be diagnosed using the Ducati Mathesis Tester or our UltiMap Diagnostics Software.

Retail Price USD 725 - contact a dealer for local pricing.

If it´s a bit expensive.. I´d go for a Power Commander III USB. For sure. They are pretty easy too hook up. Takes about 45 minutes to do it right.

I think you will find that buying the ECU from Ducati seperate from their exhaust packages is overly priced. I have used FIM replacement ECU's and Power commanders. The power commander is the most flexable for the avereage guy. You can do more with FIM and it's a good product just a little to technical for most.

+1..

PC´s = Best for quick hook up and alot of people work with them = alot of people can help you

FiM = More advanced, but alot more expensive. Not all there features work on the 998.

It´s a toss up.
