I was at the baracades at the base yesterday and and talked to caltrans workers in orange suits... fresh "slurry"(black top) but still unstable slope conditions(rocks). Still opening Monday should be beautiful (moonscape).

Speeding, moi? in the words of LA-DUC himself: "That's impossible!" haha. :abduct:

when was this? Thursday?

I'm absolutely positively planning to ride the crest sunday morning. I can't before unfortunately... but you guys let me know if and when you want to meet at the shell station then.

Looking forward to the report from tomorrow's ride.

cheers!

OK - rescheduled a bunch of work and went up this AM. I was one of three bikes I saw on the whole trip. Thoughts - the road surface is covered in road debris off all sorts from big to small - pea gravel, dirt, dust, sticks, logs, road worker shite etc.. Here is the good news - from the entry point up to redbox we have new blacktop. It is SWEET. It is the same surface used when they opened the entire way to Wrightwood. There were a few spots where it cleared and I was able to ride a few turns at speed. Awesome. The damage that the fire did is insane. EVRYTHING is toasted. This makes it a lot more windy up there, but also provides unobstructed views and a weird "google earth" view of things. Finally we got some much needed upgrades with new guardrails, raised berms off exposed drop shoulders and new concrete railings and walkways built at more scenic viewpoints.

It is going to be a rough few weeks with heavy rains predicted. But, once the initial runoff has its day, should be smooth sailing.

Very glad to be back on home turf. I'll go as far as to say that the 2 is my favorite stretch of road to date. The 33 loop is a nice substitute, but was getting cold and requires a seven hour commitment.

Sunday - who's in?

I was all set for the ride at 10:30 which got canceled due to the ongoing closure...which obviuosly was some false info, oh well, went up the 33 with no winds and hardly a sole in sight....still need to do that ride though...anxiously awaiting. Was it very windy up there today?

Sunday... how about 9:30am? late enough that we don't run into the Kamikaze gangs, but early enough so we can go to wrightwood, have lunch, and come back and still have time to do things in the afternoon...

it's supposed to start raining next Monday for several days, so let's hope it doesn't come sooner... I'm 500% not going if it looks like it will rain.

I cannot wait, I cannot wait, I cannot wait...

I guess the one good thing about the place being toast is there will be less hikers = less traffic.

Extremely windy. With the lack of protection from trees and brush it was the first time up there that I had felt a gust across my bike. Can't really remember that happening before - on that stretch of road.

Stoked for Sunday. 9:30. Going to actually stay in Sat night for once. Lol. Now that's commitment!

Ride Report 12/4/09

*Disclaimer: This was my first motorcycle ride up the Crest so I have no way of comparing it to previous conditions. However, I now know what all the fuss is about, this is an awesome ride! We only went up to Newcomb's and back.

There's fresh slurry coat from the beginning up to about Red Box. There were a few small rocks(size of your fist) on the road and gravel, especially on the fresh slurry section. The gravel isn't very big, more like in between sand and gravel. I didn't notice much wind at all, maybe we were just lucky. There's a few places where they are stopping traffic in one direction at a time. They all seemed to be below Red Box. This was a weekday, so it's hard to say if there will be more or less construction on the weekend. The first 1/8-1/4 mile they were running an escort truck, after that it was just the occasional construction area, but we only had to stop once or twice, most of the time they just motioned us on through.

Towards Newcomb's there were patches of snow in the dirt, so watch for ice as it gets colder. The weather was great, cool in the shade, but nice in the sun. I had on jeans, t-shirt, long-sleeve t, and mesh/textile summer jacket and I was totally fine. The last weather report I saw showed the rain possibly starting on Sunday, so keep an eye on it.

Pictures coming soon, uploading to photobucket right now!
