Has anyone heard that Pierre Terblanche has alluded to Ducati compromising his designs? I recently heard this was true and I'd just like to read the source articles. TIA

no designer has that much control .after reading the book on the 999 (alan cathcart)my eyes were opened as to how many designs ,and how they evolved.but theres no mistake that the projecter style headlights are terblances idea.and they are what seems to divide peoples opinions.

That's interesting because the projector style headlights don't bother me at all. It's the overall "business" of the design. To my eyes there's no "flow" to the design. I hated the "gills" on the nose fairing, whatever that little lens above both lights was and the raised panels on the side fairings. Not too fond of the "bread box" muffler either. But, hey, that's what individual taste is about, right? Since they did away with the gills and put black paint on the bike and muffler it looks less disjointed to me.

Really, I'm not trying to stir things up. Rob responded to a post of mine on Ducati.net saying that Terblanche had alluded to his designs being compromised (my word) by Ducati. I just want to read the articles. I don't know, but I'm betting that Ducati wouldn't get too heavy handed with their critique of a Tamburini design. And, if Terblanche feels stongly enough to raise the issue publicly it must be significant. I'd love to know what he thinks an untampered 999 design should be. Wouldn't it be interesting if all of "our" dissatisfaction with Terblanche's designs has been misplaced?

I recall see in Cycleworld around the time the 999 was introduced a PT interview that Ducati management (in a cost cutting effort?) "compromised" some of PT design ideas. It's be foolish to think if you're a designer that you would get everything you want, and you should plan on contingencies.

Some would argue that PT "compromised" Ducati and not the other way around :)

Nothing like a provocative title, eh ?

Of course his designs were compromised. ( It is a consumer product for gods
sake.)

I've read at least six Terblanche interviews since the beginning of the year and what I seem to conclude from them is that he is really addressing the
product type and mix ( which is far more politically charged) , rather than details of his proposals for new "shiny parts" to Ducati management.

He has been a big proponent of a Supermono revival as well as a significantly improved SS, but these do not fit within Ducati management's plans. But more significantly, he has made it pretty clear that the Hyper Motard is the kind of new Ducati that the company needs and I think he is right.

He really sees his role as something as larger than in house designer.

I am the owner of a 749 Dark and a 749R .... both obviously designed by Terblanche.

If anyone wants to come in here and call my bike ugly... get ready for the flames from HELL. As I will be expressing my opinion as well.

I am tired of people bashing my choice of bike...

... this always happens when Terblanche's name comes up.

Or better yet: come over and tell me my bike is UGLY in real life. I will give you a time and place where you can do it.

wow guy. you should uhhh... ya know... put down the keyboard... step away from the computer... and take a deep breath. Just cuz you like them doesnt mean everyone does. Think of it like this. I have seen a lot of ugly babies. The parents thought they were cute. But sure as hell they werent. Smae thing can happen with your 749. That said... the current SBK looks like modern art, and you know how it goes. Some people like modern art, some people think its a travesty. So yeah... just calm down. Have a beer. Look at porn. Good Job.

shibbydevil -- I don't care what you say, and frankly you can take your beer and put it in your back side for all I care.

As for people calling the Terblanche bike ugly on the message boards... that's real funny because they are nowhere to be seen in real life. And what does this tell you?

And there you have it !

Clinical paranoia as expressed by an expert and diagnosed by an amateur.

Huh ?

Just relax. No one said anything negative about your bike until you brought it up. The purpose of this board is discussion, right ? You forget that I think Terbie is magnificent. Check out the Hypermotard and the Supermono. Two bases loaded home runs in my opinion.

Minicoopers ? Actually they have something in common with the 999 bikes. They are both fabulous fun, but not to be confused with anything beautiful, ya know ?

My Mini is an ugly little enclosed skateboard of a thing that gives me 27-28 mpg with big smiles per mile. I've had them for years and they are great fun. One of these days when I get the time I want to get that conversion kit made in England where you can convert a Series 1 Mini to a "Twini-Mini" with two Hayabusa engines. About 350 hp/ 4 wheel drive fun on a 1300 pound platform.

Now go take that ugly, but well loved bike of yours out for a ride today. And learn to play well with others.

Yes I might ... and perhaps I may run into your sorry ass mini cooper as well (again) or perhaps one of your miserable old bikes.

I thought the whole reason Terblanche got the job was 'cause he studied under Tamburini at the Cagiva Research Center, so maybe Ducati was thinking that they'd get a "next-generation" or an evolution of the 916 design out of PT?

Just personally I think maybe PT wanted create his own legacy, so instead of using the 916 has a starting point he just did his own thing.

Honestly when the 999/749 first came out I didn't think it was that easy on the eyes, but only cause the 916/996/998 design was status quo. Once I saw the 999 in person I thought it was beautiful. I still find myself staring at my 03 749 once in a while!

I'm curious now though for 2007, if they will really try to redesign the bike? (Since I've been reading some rumors about that). But anything more than a mild update could show Ducati's own lack of confidence in the current design...I think they'll probably just release the Desmosedici RR and SuperMotard and see what happens...

pt is so unhappy i'm not surprised to hear him say anything anymore.

put a 749 next to an f4...the bike that many people argue the next gen ducatis could have, would have, and should have looked like...and yeah, the 749 is pretty gawd damned ugly. put a 749r next to any japanese bike and sure, i'll take the duc. but there are many cases that i'll choose ugly simply because that attribute alone gives the product character and makes it different.

but that's neither here nor there and just an opinion so flame on if you must, i couldn't give a rat's ass.

chiromikey --- do you need a time and place where you can tell me my bike is ugly to my face?

As far as I'm concerned you are a cowardly keyboard commando... who cannot say this very same thing to a person in real life.

You should be ashamed to bash a fellow Ducatista!!!!

nah, i don't need a time or place...you already know how i feel. saying it "in person" is overrated anyways.

if it makes you feel any better i do have to admit that the bike has grown on me...but that still doesn't make it beautiful in my eyes.
