Talk me out of a slipper clutch....

well when I got the track bike (916) back from winter prep they mentioned the clutch would probably only last me part of the season. It's just wearing out. Anyway I'd looovvee to have a slipper in there as well as a non-stock slave to ease lever effort. Just not sure I want to spend that cash on my track bike. I may consolidate bikes at the end of the year and just put my 996 street bike on the track with track bodiwork and all. I guess if I do that I can always have a slipper taken out of the 916 and put in the 996. I'd like the Surflex one but it's like $1200.

Yo Motowheels guy got any deals on used Surflex ones or something? :)

The "bargain" is the Motowheels one with Surflex plates for $929.

Well that's just dandy...I paid $1179 for mine 30 days ago! Hey Moto...How about a little in store credit to make me feel better????

I can vouch for this one, but I'm a slipper noob so I don't know how it compares to other more expensive slippers.

But my overall impression was very good after 2 full track days.

As for long-term maintenance and plate life, I can't say yet, still have less than 250 miles on it.

The Motowheels one is different.
Don't waste your time on the brake upgrades you mentioned...totally unnecessary for you...or even me for that matter. If you have a Brembo GP radial mastercylinder and some EBC HH pads (or equiv) you will be way ahead of the game. The next level would be new rotors (I like the Braketech AXIS cast-irons...more feedback). You don't need radial mounts unless you are a pro. Also I am assuming braided steel lines...

After the slipper you will get a reduced clutch pull...don't bother with the aftermarket slave unless you have an OEM failure (I just replaced my OEM piston with one of the triple O-ring ones from Evolutione cyclesports).

I have a front BST CF street rim and went with that over the RACE (magnesium rim) models because the company recommends shipping them back to South Africa ever couple of years to inspect for stress fractures!
So BST recommends you ship the wheel back to South AFrica? Do they pay for that?

The forged aluminum is sounding better all the time. : )

Only the race version with the magnesium hub, not those with aluminum hubs.

Anyway, in my experience magnesium lasts fine. The magnesium EPM wheels on my LeMans were manufactured in 1982, and are still doing fine.

Tom
So how would you decide to go with either 5.75 or 6 rear? I'm guessing you can run a 190 on the 6 but maybe not on the 5.75?
I was told 180 on the 5.5, 190 on the 6, either on the 5.75.

Tom
Sounds like 5.75 would be better for me as I run a 180 now and most people recommend it over the 190. Plus the tire is cheaper.
I have some brand new Marchesini 10 spokes forged aluminum in powder coated black for $1300.00 a set with aluminum valve stem included. These wheelsets comes with 5.5" rear so you use a 180 tire. Let me know.
What's the difference between those and the anodized or whatever were the prior years in terms of looks, performance, etc?
duc995 is right if you go with a Surflex slipper (not sure on other brands) I can attest you will not need a reduced effort slave. The Surflex is much lighter pull. There you go you're already saving money...
Yeah I have a stock old style one. Previous owner replaced already due to leaking. But still is really heavy compared to my 2001 stock one.

Just trying to think $1200 for a slipper. Man.
The Surflex slipper clutch effort is the equivalent of running 3 springs on most other clutches.
Moto,

I'm curious to know what the difference between the Motowheels Slipper Clutch with Surflex Plates and the Surflex Slipper Clutch is. On the website, the descriptions say that the MW Slipper clutch is a ramp style and the Surflex is an endless screw design.

What is the advantage/disadvantage of both of them in terms of maintenance, adjustability, etc.?

Thanks!

PS Spellcheck is cool! Great addition to the website!
I wouldn't talk anyone out of a slipper clutch.... an excellent mod.
The Motowheels slipper clutch is basically the same as all the STM, Bucci, Ducati Performance slipper clutches (ball bearing ramp style with a spider spring). All very good products.

The Surflex uses an "endless screw" design similar to the old fashioned screw drivers. When you let off the throttle, the clutch pack slides on the "screw" and releases the friction plates.

I prefer the Surflex slipper over the others because the Surflex uses lighter springs and does not have any feedback to the lever when downshifting. The complete surflex assembly is priced below an STM slipper (no plates) and slightly above the complete Motowheels slipper.
Here are some pic of my Surflex slipper apart.

The first picture is out the hub, notice no ramps like more typicla slipper. Pictures 3 is of the "endless screw"
grendels_arm,

I am not sure if you were aware of this slipper clutch or not. It's from Febur and it list for $750 from Advanced Motorsports.
