suspension question

Hi. I have a 06 749 Dark with compression settings on one fork and rebound on the other fork leg. My question is has anyone ever dealt with this particular setup before? I am use to having them both on the same fork leg.

In your manual it says what the settings are at. Just raise or lower them to your weight and riding style.

i'm pretty sure your forks are the same as the rest (just not with tinn coating)comp and rebound on each leg.don't both have the screw on the top?if so you adjust lower through the bottom of the fork,but it's easier with the picture from the owners manual

I don't know those forks. WP forks on some KTMs are like that with a compression cartridge in one leg and the rebound in the other. Not a problem adjust as usual, you only have one screw for each. If the 749 is like that I would like to know if they are Showa?? love to see inside those!

YA I WENT THROUGH MY OWNERS MANUEL LAST NIGHT AND FOUND THAT THE SET UP IS DIFFERNET THEN THE 749,749S. I HAVE A 06 749DARK AS WELL AND LIKE WISE LOOKING TO IMMPROVE MY SET UP. BEFORE YOU START MESSING WITH THE SCREW SETTINGS ON TOP OF THE FORKS YOU MUST FIRST GET A NEW AXLE FOR THE FRONT... $80 FOR A NEW AXLE! WHY YOU SAY, WELL YOU MUST LOOK AT THE OTHER MODELS AND YOU'LL KNOW. ANOTHER WONDERFUL MONEY SAVING IDEA FROM DUCATI. ON THE 749,749S THE AXLE IS PREDRILLED. OUR BIKES ARN'T AND IS A PAIN TO DO SO. SO GET A NEW AXLE AND THEN YOU WILL BE ABELL TO FULL ADJUST THE FRONT END.. HOPE TO HERE FROM YOU SOON.

They put a solid axle on the 749 Dark with the compression adjusters up there? Only Ducati would try to pull something like that off. I also thought it was strange the Dark had no steering damper nor a mount for it. I mean it is possibile that someone will track one, and it could suffer from some headshake just like rest of them. Just how much cheaper are those Dark models? Sounds like they skimped on a few things, but if it does price them with the Japanese 6ers then I guess all is good.

Thanks for the info! So you think there are adjustment screws on the bottom ? Or do the fork have to be reworked.

I can't answer for the 749. For the 748, there was a compression adjuster on the bottom of the fork leg - that's why the axle had to be oriented in a certain way - using a special tool to hold it when you tighten the axle nut.

To adjust the compression, you'd put a screwdriver up the bottom of the fork leg - through the hole in the axle - in order to access the adjustment screw.

I would expect the 749 to be similar. Otherwise, if there are no adjusters, you'd need to set preload by using shims and then adjust the damping by fork oil weight.

Wow, that sucks. So Ducati advertises the 749 Dark's Showa fork as being fully adjustable, but in reality, only after you buy a new axle?

As for price, the Dark is $1500 less than the standard 749 ($12,500 versus $14,000), and still a good deal more than the $9000 for the latest Japanese 600.
