I was out yesterday for a nice ride. Beautiful weather here in CT. I live near a very large & popular gathering spot for riders and on Sunday sport bikes and (and others) flock to a little part of Danbury. You get an extreme concentration of bikes, and I must say I get disappointed every week with how the "superbike" riders are the biggest idiots on the road. I saw up close and personal the effects 6 of them had on traffic (and on me) as we rode a few miles coming off the hiway and into local streets. They were speeding in excess, splitting lanes and cutting people off. Traffic was heavy and many of the dangerous moves they made ended slowing them down so we kept meeting in traffic as I held my lane and speed. As we got into town cars I ended up next to were reacting to be "trashed" by these idiots and cutting me off or driving in anticipation of the "stupid sport bikes. At one point I was stopped at a traffic light next to one of these guys. He gives me a head nod, I lifted my vision and asked why he was riding like such a jerk. He had come down the exit ramp at over 100mph zipping by inches from me. I am 45, married and have a famliy. My inital reaction was to knock him off his bike and kick the crap out him but then you remenber your suppose to be the mature one. He gave no response and took off from the light cutting cars off for as long as I could see him. Once again, in the wake of his reckless riding, the cars I was near or passing were clearly ticked off by anything that looked like a sport bike. The only up part of the day was I had passed and ridden near 3 other Ducati's. Two monsters and one 749. Those 3 riders rode respectfully. I was happy to be on a Ducati because "in general" I really don't see that behavior on Duc's. The day reminded me all riders effect the way other motorist see us, so keep the "spirited" riding respectful and safe... and at least in my area be prepared to ride with cars that are use to sport bike riders being just plain stupid and dangerous.

I had a guy flip me the bird a few days ago when I was passing him legally. He was one of 4 in a van going about 15 miles under the speed limit. I waited until it was a legal passing area and actually passed them at the posted limit. I got lucky enough to stop at a gas station up the road and the same van pulled in. I had to ask why and he said it was because of the other bike that had passed him at a high rate of speed. I proceeded to tell the idiot that it obviously wasn't me who passed him and that I wouldn't be too mean to him for all of the cars that had pulled in front of me. Either way... One idiot on a sport bike can mess it up for everyone!

Yep, good point. I never really thought much about why cars around here seem to take pleasure in abusing the bike riders. Some I am sure just don't see you...then their are others that seem to find joy in cutting you off. After last weekend, with all the bone-head superbike riders I saw riding with complete disrespect and being a danger to others ....I understand why some car drivers are tempted to give a little pay back. I need to keep that in mind around here.

When something like this happens when I'm out on a ride, or even working in my front yard, I'll say to the offending knuckle-dragging mouth-breather something like: "you're lucky I'm not on duty. If I was, you'd be signing a citation for <enter offense here>."

I'm not a cop, but they don't know that.

It's a shame we have to fight such an uphill, unwinable battle against public perception.
