Just make sure that your side kickstand is up.
The kickstand switch will prevent the engine from running when it is not in neutral. Another safety feature.

Which reminds me that I almost dropped one of my old bikes once. I was planning to start bike for warming up and then begin to putting driving gear on. I started without sitting on the bike at it was on first gear even that neutral light was on...
Thank god I got it grabbed before ground. But after that I have never started bike without sitting on it
