A big allen wrench works. If you grease the threads and washer on the nut side, it's not often you really need to use anything in there. You can hold it with your fingers enough to tighten the nut. If needed, I just use a metric bolt (head inserted into the axle) with vice grips holding at the threads. Forget the size.

Ya, Really you don't need it , When i started torquing up the axle nut the axle just kind of locks up and doesn't turn anyway.
