Hey All,
06 ST3 here, usually running around 90~100 C, fan kicks in @ 100. 95% of my rides are city stop and go (Tokyo heavy traffic), so never much time to build up air cooling effects..

Anyone else have issues with heat under their seat/gas tank & clutch side near your knee? I've always thought the bike was kind of hot even in the winter (just bought it in Jan), but it's never been a huge issue until now (summer). Just wondering what you guys do to dampen the affects... so far I've been thinking of:
  • Under seat/under tank heat shields (the kind with sticky tape on the back you can form to anything)
  • desmo times fan upgrade kit
  • exhaust wrap
  • coolant flush & refill w/ engine ice/water wetter
Any tried & true or waste of time attempts you have made?

sorry if this has been covered many times... searched but only found coolant debates... maybe my google-fu is off...

Wear gear, not jeans, and you'll be fine. :) Usually the heat is on the left side as that's where the V header comes down. The fan should kick in at 102-04 *C. :) Wrap has pros and cons, the cons being it gets and stay wet.

In my opinion, if 95% of your rides are Tokyo commuting, the ST is a poor choice. Definitely a keeper for long blasts, but in the city, I'd choose something more appropriate. You're getting 5% of the satisfaction of riding this bike. Again, just my opinion.

+1 The few times I wore jeans, the heat was a bit ridiculous. In leathers, the temps have yet to bother me.

Have a good one.

I would think the Desmo Times upgrade would be helpful. The full package with the manual on/off switch will let you turn it on early. Just the fan itself will move more air and cool things down a bit quicker.

Don't know if engine ice or water wetter will help or not. Water wetter was originally designed to be used at race tracks since it's not as slippery as glycol used in normal anti-freeze/coolant.

I am in Tokyo (well, work there) as well and the heat on my ST4 is the same. Major problem in the summer. Leathers are okay, but the humidity make them a bit uncomfortable. When at a light, I open my knees up to let some of the heat up and away. I bought a desmotimes kit, but have not installed it yet. Should help a bit. But you and I know what Tokyo traffic can be like....split lanes, get to the head of the class, take off ahead of everyone and get some cool air in there. I also have a perforated Ducati jacket that I use in the summer to help keep upper body a bit cooler. We need to think of some kind of deflector to help us out. Gonna be a hot one this year!

Do you run with more water in summer months, ie 20/80 coolant/water? Might help. :)

On my ride back to Kali from Oklahoma I managed to get 2nd degree burns on my calf WTF! (left side of course) I WILL be wrapping that header before my next trip) . Strange thing is that I went to Denver with the wife just after we bought it and never (as far as I can remember) had an issue with that. The bike is as stock now as it was 5 years ago!
Cheers all.

I'm on my second ST - first without exhaust wrap and second with. The wrap does help some. Fan is on the left side tho and that rear cylinder header, so that's going to be the worst side.

You might try the Desmo Times better fan blade mod - that might move air better and help a little.

I would also go one or two teeth larger on the rear sprocket too - that will make heavy traffic easier, with minimal affect on top speed.
