What is the difference between the belts on the 97-2000 ST2 (73710011A) and the belts on the 2001-2002 ST2 (73710081A)? The later belts are much more expensive. I thought it might be due to the kevlar reinforcement, but don't all of the replacement belts have that now?

Thanks,

Russ

I've always figured that the belts were the same.

According to the offical Ducati parts manuals:

2002 - part number 73740023A
2001 - part number 73740023A
2000 - part number 73740021A

According to www.ca-cycleworks.com part #73710011A is the part number for "all" ST2 bikes (and M900, SS900, and MH900e bikes).

But, looking at an online OEM parts service: http://www.ducatiomaha.com/products.asp

2002 - part number 73740023A: $55.98 and has a superceded part #73710081A
2001 - part number 73740023A: $55.98 and has a superceded part #73710081A
2000 - part number 73740021A: $28.99 and has a superceded part #73710011A

So, it looks like you are correct that the '01 and '02 belts are different than at least the '00 belts, and now I'm curious as to what the difference is.

I am not familiar with the two models but I know there are several different belts, there are 4 valve belts and 2 valve belts and I Know the two valve belts have both round teeth and square teeth the 00' ST has round teeth belts.

Maybe the cheaper number is for a single belt and the other is for the pair?

Just a guess.

I thought I read somewhere that one was kevlar reinforced, the other was a normal belt. I also remember reading that the newer belts had teeth that allowed for more surface contact with the cam gear. Unfortunately, I don't remember where I read this so I can't quote a source :(
