Ok guys, new thing happened on my bike. I went to downshift into second and then first and found that the shift lever was stuck in the down position. I lifted it up with my foot and then downshifted and it worked fine, went into second, stayed down, picked it up with my foot, and then pushed it down into first. The lever stays down. So I have to pick it up, then pick it up for neutral. It is going into the gears fine, it just doesnt return to the resting position, but ONLY on like on downshifting into second and first. What is going on? Lets hope its a common easy to fix problem.

I am thinking you broke the linkage spring. it is located under the left hand cover. Not a big deal to fix. The spring is a looped hairspring type thing on a dog-leg linkage. I think they were commonto break on the older bikes.
