I am on the lookout for a naked sportsbike. The S2R 800 seems like a very interesting bike. How does it compare to the older 900 Monster and the newer aircooled 1000 Monster?

How much power can I expect from the 800 and a full system/slip-ons, and what options are available at what cost?

Handling and comfort is at least as important as power, but I am a bit worried it will feel tame compared to my previous bikes, a 01' gsxr600 and 98' vfr800.

The S2R 800cc engine is VERY nice, but you will have to do without the classic dry-clutch, since the 800 uses a wetclutch..

The 800 engine will not give the same power as a 900 or a 1000DS, but timing the cams, fidling with the fuel and letting the exhaust flow does give some more power to play with.

Brad Black at Moto-One down in Autralia has been playing quite alot with the S2R, you might think about visiting his website.

Here is a graph off what you CAN do.
GREEN: the bike all std
RED: std with cat replacement header.
BLUE: remapped – cam timing at 107 inlet centreline, DP muffler set, DP air filter kit and FIM U59 ECU.

And Torque with Fuel/air

Buy the S2R 1000, better engine, with more possibilities. Still an aircooled 2-valve, so lighter than the 4-valve water cooled ones.

I have an 800ss with the same motor - it's very sweet and has been tweaked to a fraction under 80bhp with 56ft-lbs of torque. It's got all the power necessary for road riding and has little trouble keeping up with much more poweful stuff. Go for it. :)
