Rizoma Bars on Sport 1000 (The Ride Report)

Hi All,

Just finished a sweet Sunday ride on my 06 Sport 1000 (if you love your clip-on bars read no further).
Spent the weekend setting the bike up with Rizoma aluminum handlebars and shorty brake/clutch levers and I must say it’s way more fun to ride. I’m a lot more comfortable and the bike handles better in the city. All the cables and wires were long enough after re-routing. The shorty levers have more adjustment so the clutch is easier to pull and being able to two finger the front brake is very nice.
Even though I had to have the top clamp machined to mount the bars I have no regrets, the stock bars were just too low and forward for me. Plus the bike wheelies better now :)

Parts Used:
Rizoma Conical Handlebars (with ½” cut off each end)
Rizoma Conical Handlebar Adapter, 40mm Rise
CNR 2-finger Billet Levers (from Seattle Ducati)
Rizoma Billet Grips & Bar Ends

Next step is to clean up the brake/clutch reservoirs.

can you send a pic of the profile??
didnt feel inclined to use the 07 hi-rise clipons???
Corks: I test rode an 07 to try out the taller risers. They are an improvement.... but still to far forward for me. The rizomas put me in the perfect position, feels more like an Aprilia Tuono now. Everyone is built differently but I suspect most sport riders would like this new setup. Its lower & narrower than the GT bars.

Lat: I will try to get side shots for you (Its winter in Seattle so it will be weather permitting).

Machining drawing attatched, Cheers,

I like it, I've been having some tendinitis issues with my elbows and was thinking of doing the same thing but thought I'd have to replace the top triple tree, did you have someone local do the machining or did you do it yourself? Does it seem to take some weight off of your wrists and elbows?
I owned a Monster before my SC and while I wouldn't trade the SC for one I think that would give the SC a simiar riding position, and maybe give my old elbows and wrists a break. Any information that you can share would be appreciated.
Black Duck,

If your wrists and back hurt, I cannot recommend this solution enough.

This change has eliminated all my riding pain, and made the bike much more fun to ride. It sits you up similar to a monster but not quite as high because the monster’s seat is lower. I had a fellow in Seattle do the machining (see drawing above) and he did a great job, I can hook you up with him if you want. The machining is very simple and anyone with a CNC mill should be able to do it from my drawing. Rizoma makes 60mm (3/4” taller) risers you could try also.
I like this mod a lot. I might pick up a GT top triple clamp and a flat bar so I still have the stock TC. My bike would get ridden a lot more especially in town. I never liked the apearance of the 07 risers and felt that the bar position needed to come back and inch or more anyway.

John,

The GT top clamp is a good call, make sure you get the GT risers also because the rizomas will not fit. With that set up you can run any standard (22mm) diameter bar. Check out the 22mm aluminum rizoma bars, I think they are a better match for the bike than the GT ones (the gt's are a bit highter and steel).

In either case you will like it

What is the deal with the fit? Is the GT clamp for a different diameter bar? My intent for a bar is probably in shape like the Rizoma or BMW R90S or old Honda 400F or simply a flat drag bar. Just curious why the need for the risers.

John
Hopefully I can clear this up.
Standard handlebar diameter is 22mm (or 7/8”) this should be the size of the Ducati GT1000 bars.

I used an aluminum Rizoma bar that is fatter in the middle (29mm) and tapers outboard (22mm) so the controls will fit. Because of this nonstandard 29mm middle I had to use the matching Rizoma riser (handlebar adapter). These risers are bigger at the base than the Ducati GT ones so they will not fit on that top triple clamp…….

No worries though, if you go with the GT top clamp and riser you can run any standard 22mm (7/8”) aluminum bar. Check PJ’s parts and Motostrano for aluminum bars by LSL, Renthal, or Rizoma.

I am planning to polish my risers to match the top clamp.

Thanks for the clarification. I figure the top gt clamp would be expensive enough so trying to keep the mod cheap and simple as possible.

The Completed Project

As promised, here are the pictures of the completed bar swap.
Risers are polished and fluid reservoirs are lowered.

Went for a 150mi ride yesterday and it it's comfy for me :)

Looks nice! Those Rizoma bars look like about the same bend as the LSL bars that I'm running on my GT, and I love the riding position.
Where'd tou buy Rizoma's risers, the dealer or direct? I went to there web site I didn't find ordering info.
The best spot to buy Rizoma stuff is PJ's parts.

This stuff is getting expensive in the US (weak dollar)

Just found your other pics, so please disregard my earlier question. Now all I need to done is find someone here in NC to do the work
Interesting mod.

I am buying an 07, which has raised bars. I still might try to raise them some more, so this will be a helpful tech.

Anyone has raised bars on an 07?
Hi DucBeak,

I put 6000 miles on the bike last Summer, the Rizoma bars are fantastic, much more comfortable. Another benefit was that they give nice leverage on rough roads, the bike never gets squirrely over bumps any more :)

New drawing attached.
If you need machining help, contact Kent Hall ([email protected]). He modified my top clamps as well as several others, he does beautiful work.

Cheers,
Lee C.

Well, i think i'm glad this thread got revived. I've been looking for a compromise set of bars for my GT. This looks like them. I tried Norman Hydes- I liked the look, but without rear sets, my neck/head angle was just to radical. I was going to try a set off a monster, but if the shipping doesnt kill me, this is what i'll go for.
Do you have to drill the bars for location pins on a GT?
