run it hard..

with Ferraris, driving it regularly increases costs because of more frequent maintenance intervals (major services with age or mileage), but lack of driving it makes the service costs higher. so when you drive it (hopefully often), drive the hell out of it and get your money's worth. there's no point in babying it. actually, this worked for me since i drove the Ferrari for fun.. never really enjoyed taking it to get groceries or to the mall.

the purpose of my Ducati, is also for pure fun (although i commute with it).. so i ride it as much as i can without worrying about babying it or not.

and i agree with daniel.. if i had a collector bike, i'd probably have a more regular bike to beat on.. and save the collector bike for the sunny weekends. if my only bike was a collector bike, i'd ride the hell out of it anyway.

As the owner of a "collector bike", my thought and general approach to ALL motorcycles is this: Treat them well, service them, maintain them, keep them clean. Respect their mechanical strengths, inspect, monitor, repair their inherent mechanical weaknesses...

And ride 'em every chance you get. You ain't gettin' any younger, and worshipping yer scoot is likely to get you killed because you never really learn how to ride her for fear of messin' her up. I don't believe in wontonly beating the pee out of anything. Take good care of it, be proud of the wear that may come to show, and appreciate the character the bike develops as it ages gracefully (hopefully along with the owner). -Capt

If you are a collector that just stores the bike.. You can get away with claiming the bike hasn't cost you a cents in the 20 years you owned it.. Never had a breakdown or left you stranded.. Was the most reliable bike you have owned.

i think its a combo of riding it and keeping it nice and clean!
I would hope that would be obvious. Maintaining a machine at a high level doesn't preclude riding the Hell out of it (like it meant to be).

Freakin' shame Bayliss rode that F06 at Monza last week. Talk about a limited edition bike. Could have crashed it. Could have broken the motor. But NOOO-OOOH... He had to go out and ride it. Probably gonna need a top-end rebuild soon. Dummy.

What are you talking about, Mike? He was clearly "babying" it. lol

I think it's an age thing. When i was a younger lad and fit as a butcher's dog i would ride the hell out of whatever and whenever and didn't give a damn. After a few tumbles and seeing mates take the long ride to oblivion a feeling of self preservation started to gnaw at me. The thrill or bravado of riding through all weathers just to say "hey, i'm a Biker" starts to wear off as the bones start creaking and the butt starts aching. For sure, i still need the buzz but nowadays not as often. :)

I was right on the verge of saying "Sunny day, etc." but then I fell on the correct side of the dilemma. Of course, you could also keep it clean and do the living room thing too. That's what I'd do. As sweet as it is, I don't think the PS would be my main mount though. More like the MH900e, a piece of art.
I was having the same problem coming to the conclusion with my 2003 GTI. Then I realised, these things were never meant to stay covered up in a garage. They should be shared with the world. As a gift, ya know?
