The light completes the charging circuit.
It must come on when you turn the key on and go off once the engine is running. If it comes on when the engine is running (and the revs are up) it could mean a dead or dying alternator or regulator/rectifier.
If it doesn't light when you turn the key on it could just be a blown globe and teh battery will not charge.
I have no idea about leds and if they will work in this situation.
