I was cleaning and lubing the chain today when I noticed that if I grap the rear sproket and shake it there is some small play (maybe 0.10 mm).

Is it normal?

Also, cleaning the sprocket I notices some wear on the side of the sproket teeth.

Is this normal? I thought that the sprocket wears only in between the teeth, not on the sides.

Maybe this is because the sprocket has some play?

Both the play and the wear are normal (wear looks like >5,000 miles?).
The "cush drive" is built into the sprocket on these bikes-- that is, the
five mounting points of the sprocket are encased in rubber to dampen
driveline shock before it gets back into the transmission. Most bikes have
the cush drive in the rear hub itself, but then, most bikes don't have
single-sided swingarms with eccentric hub chain adjusters.

Thanks dave2riff!

So let me get this straight: the lateral play of the sprocket (left to right, not backward to forward) is OK?

Thanks a lot!

P.S: Good catch! the mileage is 6000! You were pretty close!

Mine move a helluva lot more than .10mm.! More like 5.0mm...at least! There have been a couple threads about this but never a totally straight answer.Until I see debris such as metallic shavings, grey goo, etc. I won't sweat it.There are no nasty noises and everything is tight. I have approximately 4000 mi. on it.
That being said, my buddy rides an 848 with about the same mileage, and there's no play.I know there was a recall on the early 848 cushdrives but I don't know the details.
