Well, we seem to be on the same page here MikeM ! I bought a 78 SS new and loved that bike....it was quite obscene the attention it got from me. I ditched the stock wheels and used a spoke setup. Just gorgeous...but I digress.

I am very uneasy with the general "retro" trend in all things automotive, but it seems to be working pretty well for all who sell it. The F-1 would be a slam dunk, don't ya think ? Nicer still if they can actually keep the principle features intact the way that photo seems to indicate with the very small fuel tank ( within the trellis frame width) and reasonably skinny fairing ( unlike the
PS SC). Plus horsepower is just too much to ask for.

Hope they do it well.

I REALLY like that F-1 and it's the only one of the SC's I'd consider. To me (I bought a 1977 SuperSport brand-new) it's kind of weird trying to dress up a rubber-band motor to look like a bevelhead. The single-sided swingarms and goofy shocks don't make it for me on a "Retro" bike, either.

But IMO the F-1 really works. Still an F-1, just updated. Now if they'd only bump the HP to 105 or 110...

Offer a dual-seat kit for those who ride two-up and the SuperSports will sell again in decent numbers.

Re: the S2R 1000, how many hp can they squeeze out of that bike using all the available the DP parts for it ?

How could you argue that the Monster line is "languishing", when we got the S2R last year, and the S2R 1000 this year?

It can be done !

FWIW

It has been done before.

The specs for the 1986-7, 750 Monjuich, Laguna Seca, and Santamonica were:

95 hp ( 748 cc )
trellis frame ( alloy unspecified )
full fairing
double seat
single headlight/tailight ( turn indicators etc.)
341 lbs. dry
Price- not shown

I'll keep beating the drums on this topic until some manufacturer actually builds a bike like this.

The concept is sound, but Ducati seems content to ignore their heritage and the market between the ST and Superbike models (the logical SS niche).

The product concept repeated:
- 1000DS motor (tweaked for 100 HP)
- Chromoly (not "high tensile" steel) trellis frame (two-seater w/steel subframe, single-seater with alloy)
- Minimal yet functional fairing (think Bimota DB-5)
- Single headlight/tailight
- Single-seater specifics: Forged alloy wheelset, carbon fairing/bits, Ohlins suspenders, radial front brake calipers
- Wet weight under 400#
- $9995/$11,995 (double/single-seaters)
