Not sure if this has been posted, but saw this on DucsUnlimited, and sure enough - on the ducati site.....quite a good deal at the price, even if it's just a stripped down standard SS model?

I just read it on http://www.roadracingworld.com/news/article/?article=24946 Wow, Ducati might be showing signs of life. One disappointment I see is the use of stock bodywork with all the holes...come on put some race bodywork on it.

Need to start checking the CMRA rule might be time to flip back to Ducati :)
wtf?

That just means you get a SS1000 but without any lights..

They aren´t even trying, since all "race-ready" sold machines are named RS models.
....then talk to BCM about a titanium frame somone told you about for this model. ;)

I've seen and touched it

I was thinking the same thing Vito!....call it a race bike if it truly is....not just a half assed prep job....it is nice for the racers to buy a street bike and get the comp money back in contingency as well as the money they get from selling off the street stuff to offset the cost of real race gear...like race fairings with bellypans....when I read the RoadRacing article before I logged into here and read that....I was like WTF...you can buy a leftover 05 for almost the same price as what they are offering this bike for....
Sounds like they want to slash prices in order to clear out some bikes without making it look like they HAVE to slash prices in order to move some bikes.

Turn signals and lights nonwithstanding, I wonder if they are "Non-US Spec" bikes that just aren't moving in other markets...
"These motorcycles are almost identical to Model Year 2005 SS1000F. In order to be brought into the United States for “Racing Purposes Only” the following components have been removed: Front Headlamp, Rear Tail Light, Mirror, Turn Signals."

"Pricing:
MSRP: $7,999"

wow so what this means is the lights and mirrors on my bike are worth 3 grand?
damn well ill sell mine for 2 grand to anyone who wants to take this steal of a deal! this way i can buy new replacement lights and mirrors and the termi exhaust im saving for, prolly still come out ahead. :p :D

At least they tried to be clever in moving the left over '05 models out, let me guess, they had about 30 left over they need to sell? :p

BTW whats the 'F' for in SS1000F? (I would guess france? are there different street spec requirements for various countries in europe? that could get expensive to produce, I had just assumed there was US model and European/everywhere else model)

Agree with the comments above, that it should at least come with race plastics, but I was thinking it's a good price/deal compared to the new std 1000SS, for anyone who's gonna track it....(not sure WHY someone would track a brand new 1000SS vs a used SBK, though - unless there're specific racing classes for the config...

Air cooled twins are eligable for more race classes than water cooled.

30 bikes at $7,999 apiece is nearly a quarter of a million dollars... You want that in cash or in inventory gathering dust?

Keep in mind that Ducati may not sell 1,000 SuperSports for the whole of 2005 and next year, when the rest of the Sport Classics arrive, they'll probably sell even fewer of them. In that context, 30 bikes is a fairly significant number - 3% of annual sales or more than 10% of what they sell in any quarter.

For all we know Ducati may be in the process of killing the SuperSport line completely. Or maybe the Sport Classic line will kill it for them. Anybody wanna guess how many SuperSports Ducati will sell next year now that the Classics are on the way???
"Technical Details":
"These motorcycles are almost identical to Model Year 2005 SS1000F. In order to be brought into the United States for “Racing Purposes Only” the following components have been removed: Front Headlamp, Rear Tail Light, Mirror, Turn Signals. “Competition Only” stickers are prominently placed on the bikes as well. The bodywork is stock, so there will be holes where the components have been removed. For most racing organizations, the bodywork would need to be replaced with enclosed belly pan bodywork in order to be used on the track. Colors available are red and yellow".

These bikes look like nothing more than stripped down SS's! Remove a bunch of stuff and don't even fill in the holes. I read nothing about any special engine/suspension mods made to these bikes to make them unique for racing. So for 8K I get a bike with holes in the plastics that I need to replace, a stock motor that I need to invest big $$$$ in to race it, stock suspension that may need to be tweaked, and I have to trailer it because I can't ride it on the street. What a deal! NO THANKS!!! I'll buy a 2005 leftover and build it up from there.

I think this is spot on..The Sport Classic line offers a greater model differentiation within the overall product line but with many of the same components and methods of production.
and a higher price tag. ;)

...Voila!!
I can't see the Sport Classics cutting into SS sales that much. They strike me too much as more niche bikes than serious rides. Nothing against them, I personally think they're fantastic. If I find myself looking to up the stable by a couple of bikes, the Sport GT would be the second one I'd buy. Following a '97 900SS, of course. The SS seems to be bridging the gap between the ST series and the Superbikes. Sportier, but not all-out race oriented. Just my personal opinion.

And yes, I too find it ridiculous that they're selling a stripped down bike for what you could pick up last-years model for. No proper race parts? Please...
Before they kill the Supersport, I hope they'd release a nice SS1000DS FE... Cos I really like the Supersport as a whole!

At this point, Ducati only sells 1,000 SuperSports per year, so it's not going to take a whole lot of guys to say "I'll take a Classic instead" before the impact is felt.

We'll get a preliminary indication of what SC sales are doing to SS sales next week when Ducati releases last year's Q4 sales figures. Of course, it will be difficult to tell which is impacting SS sales more, the Paul Smart or the 1,000cc Monster S2.

It's rumored that the next Sport Classic in the Ducati lineup will be an F1 Replica. If the pictures can be believed, that bike - IMO - will be the best of the Retros. I'm starting to think that bike - and the new Monster - will be the final straw for what we know as the Super Sport line unless Ducati makes some significant changes to the standard bike.
I remember this snap floating around last year sometime. I sure did like what I saw but it's still not what I'd call practical. Not to say I wouldn't buy one though.
