Inside my fairings I have the blanket stuff, is that sound proofing or insulation against the elements?

Its just I will be putting some crash protection on my bike and I need to cut a hole in the fairing and need to trim the blanket. just wanted to know what it was used for.

ta and thanks in advance

I'm pretty sure it's to reduce noise from the wind blasting around in the fairings.

Keeping your knees warm :)

its an attempt to keep the noise of these old aircooled bikes down. manufacturing restrictions mean the noise allowed would be less the newer the bike is. Its why bevel drives, conti exhausts and open carbs (and carbs in general) are all but outlawed these days

Aren't carbs gone because of emmisions instead of noise? I can't really see why carbs would be louder then injection.

Well noise is an emission, but yes you are correct.
Some carbs do make quite a noise though FCR's for instance, expecially without an airbox.
