Have you done any work to the clutch system, i.e. fluid drain and fill or adjustments? You may also want to take a look at your adjustment, it may be backed out all the way. It sounds like your slave cylinder is fully engaged. This happened once on my 999, it took a little messin with but it finally went back to normal.

Your clutch lever was hard to pull and you can't change gears?

Is this two problems or one? Just because the clutch lever doesn't work, doesn't necessarily mean you can't change gears. Does the gear lever move at all?

The 848/1098's have some issues with the shifter return spring, but I've never heard of an issue with the clutch pack.

How long have you had this bike?

Does it make noise before you squeeze in the lever and less when the clutch is engaged.

Could it be you just need to work your forearm out a bit?
