Paul Smart owner in search of unicorn, Lower Fairings.

7469 Views 38 Replies 16 Participants Last post by  mikethepole
I am proud new Paul Smart owner, I know from reading and researching forums, finding a set of the OEM Paul Smart lower fairings is like finding a unicorn but nevertheless that’s what I’m looking for. I know they are not cheap when they come up. Anyone happen to have a set for sale? Or have a lead on a set?

I know I’ll have to be realistic here, so I am considering a set of aftermarket fairings but have heard very mixed reviews when it comes to good fitment and of course matching the silver metal flake paint. So far the best reviews I’ve seen for for are for Airtech’s aftermarket fairings. Any suggestions and or experience from owners who have purchased high quality aftermarket lower fairings, would be much appreciated.
Thanks.

Be very careful when dealing with a brand new member that says they have what you are looking for.

There are guys in the Sport Classic Group on Facebook willing to pay a pretty big number for the PS lower fairings. A guy has a set listed for $5,500 USD and several people are seriously considering buying them.

EDIT: They are sold. The OP said they sold for around $6,100 USD for each set.

I know that Worthing Classics said he would do another run of the carbon fiber ones if he could get enough people interested. He's on Facebook as well.
To the OP
Current eBay bike for sale where the owner states they have parts you may be looking for:

I bought my Paul Smart in Dec 2019 with 6,400 miles on it. Now at 7,000 miles the original fairings are cracking. I'm having them repaired (they look outstanding), but need aftermarket fairings going forward so I can store the originals and still ride the bike. Any other vendors to check into besides Airtech? Like to check out all options. Thanks.

After trying a couple of aftermarket lowers and ending up using the Airtech for my build since it in the end had the best fit I just don't understand why a company like Airtech don't make the 95% fitting product they sell into a 100% fitting product?

I'm not a fiberglass mold specialist but I have worked with the materials and procedures in my line of job and I'm almost sure that a couple of hours of adjustment to the mould by Airtech would fix the problems.

In my case I ended up with a result where 99.99% of people can't see the fit problem, but for my own satisfaction it would of course be good if it was perfect.

Why Airtech, Why???

Beautiful bike!

couple of questions.. (Simply because I'm curious to hear why people do certain mods etc..., and I genuinely don't mean any sarcasm or negative input, feels I have to write this because people get easily offended and take things the wrong way... so picture us nerding over your bike with a couple of beers as friends would... your bike is stunning...)

how come you mounted the shocks upside down, (since you have the low hanging exhaust and don't need the clearance for the Zards)?

Seems like you spent some real $$, why did you not upgrade the brakes? That's as important as the suspension IMO...

Where did you source your fork guards?

lastly, your bike screams for a black alcantara schedoni seat!!! In case your wife is looking to get you a nice Xmas gift...hint hint.. (also, easier to swap a mono seat for the biposto seat rather than taking the cowl off each time...)

Enjoy this stunning machine!

Best,
D.

I guess we all have our own reason for our SC projects and what we want the result to be and for me it is that I have always wanted to have a MHR Mille over all other Ducatis but after finally getting a 1986 MHR Mille and riding it for a while I found that the driving style was not what I wanted so I started my Sport Classic project.

It is actually a old build where I purchased the bike in 2012 and then used 4 years finding all the parts I wanted so bike was on the street the first time the summer of 2016 and since then I have only made very few adjustments.

The shocks are upside down because this is how they are on the original MHR and after confirming with Technical Support at Ohlin in Sweden that it made no difference it was done like that because of the visual effect.

I did not upgrade the brakes because of the look and also because my driving style are not aggressive enough that I have found it necessary.

My fork guards are from JC/PAK Bikes, but I'm not sure they are available anymore since I purchased mine in 2014.

I have not removed the seat cowl for a couple of years so that is not a big problem, but Alcantara is of course always good so it could be a project for the future together with a few more things I have on my list of improvements.

Best Regards

Makes perfect sense. thanks. Beautiful bikes!
JC has a set of PS side fairings on ebay right now. Ducati Paul Smart Sport Classic fairing full lowers. Free USA Shipping | eBay

If I had a PS, I'd buy these all day long, as the value of these fairings is just going to keep rising....
where in Canada are you?

there are 4 options to my knowledge

1. look for OEM - best option but keep in mind that OEM lowers were prone to cracking at the bottom mounting points. I have seen this a lot
2. as you mentioned, Airtech. quality is poor and they require A LOT of sanding and prepping to mount properly and look decent
3. check eBay Italy. Someone there also advertises lowers but DON'T be fooled, they are not OEM despite the misleading description. My friend in Germany got a set and they are comparable to Airtech. Perhaps they are Airtech and are being prepped and painted and sold as "OEM"
4. Worthing Classics - Luke makes lowers made of carbon. the advantage is that they will not crack like the OEM but the disadvantage is that you need to do some serious homework on how to avoid the carbon touching the tank. if you don't, the abrasive carbon will destroy your tank and any other areas it touches on your bike. Perhaps Luke has solutions for this. I also don't know if he as any fairings left for sale

other than that, I am not aware of any other leads
Speaking to most of this, I have both the OEM and Worthing Classics fairings and I would say that they both would rub against the tank not just Worthing Classic's.
My cheap solution was to go to a window tint shop and I basically picked up (for free) leftover clearbra scraps from them, I then cut and mounted them unto the edges of the fairing and the point in contact with the tank.
It was cheap insurance to prevent any paint rubbing from happening.

I bought some clear 3M tape for doors to do this. The strip is about 2 to 3 inches wide. I have not had the time to put on mine yet. How did yours look and can you post a pic?
I’m looking at buying a PS and the only thing holding me back right now is paying a bit more than I want to but it comes with the larger lower fairings. Is there a way to confirm that the fairings are OEM on this bike?

Your fairings must be mounted incorrectly. The original lowers with original hardware do not touch nor rub the tank. Something is incorrect on your bike

Curious if anyone knows the answer to this. I believe my fairings are OEM, but I am owner #3, and owner #2 bought it with the fairings on it already. He thought they were OEM though. The fitment is as spot on as I would expect OEM to be. Plus, I bought it in 2012, which I believe is before aftermarket options were out there (except maybe the Carbon ones, which these are not). My only real source of skepticism is, the Airtech website is using a photo of my bike on their Sportclassic page. The photo is one that was used when previous owner put it up for sale (but Airtech added the website watermark). I believe they likely just did a google search and grabbed a representative photo to use, since the PS photo they have looks like a similar deal. I thought it possible mine was used as the prototype or early fitment or something, but that seems unlikely since Airtech is in CA and my bike has always been on the east coast.

Ultimately I don't care all that much, since I don't plan to sell them or it. Just have always been really curious.

JC still has his set on ebay:
What may seem like a lot to some today, will be a steal in a couple years. I say don't wait, get them while you can. Luke's fairings are a great option for those who plan on using their bikes
