the battery idiot light is on full time on my 98 st2 but the battery is still charging. i plan to black out the light and install a voltmeter. desmotimes is out of stock on his voltmeter for some time, the google search finds a suitable unit that only draws 3 mamps, so i can wire it directly to the battery. any ideas on what to use for an inline fuse? meanwhile i will fumble around with a google search. heres vm source.

My desmotimes one is installed without any fuse. Current draw so low not a factor. It is the same one you have linked...just that the linked one is not a full "kit". Be sure to bead around the entire base between the rubber seal and the voltmeter with silicone or it WILL leak.

a voltage spike over 24 volts seems unlikely, i will just wire it to the battery. now to find some lugs that fit the battery terminal to small dia. wire and check that caulk tube is not solid, thanks for the info.

Find a decent, used Escort 8500 radar det. on eBay and buy it.
These have a "PILOT V" mode, so that they will display voltage when it's not receiving a radar signal.

I've had one for 7 or so years now. I find it very handy. Like today, close to 100mph, and BLAAAAAAAAHH! Hey, it worked. No ticket, not even a persuit.

Have you replaced the connector behind the radiator? My battery idiot light was on full time until I replaced this connector by soldering wire around it.

This thread http://www.ducati.ms/forums/showthread.php?t=44487&highlight=gas talks about it.

The other great way to use it is on top of your tank bag. Then the bag can work on allthe bikes in your stable. You just need extra t.b. harnesses, and a battery harness to match the set-up. I've been doing this since 1981.

Helps keep the wrist happy!

Good point on that black connector. The way I found mine bad, is to grab hold of it while the bike is running. Make sure it's up around 2000 or so rpm. Grab that connector, and if it's real hot, it's gonzo.

i have been through all the connectors, and wires attached the vr, plus the stator leads. they all appear like new, no corrosion, no crispy critter stuff, nothing that looks like dd's photo.

Wow... the light on my ST2 was a hint "to look for more". And that led me to the hot connector.

only 4100 miles on this one, records show it sitting with only a few hundred miles between 2003 and 2009, it appears to have been kept indoors.

My connector looked fine from the outside but was nearly impossible to pull apart. I recommend a visual inspection or the trick that Stick mentioned. This connector goes bad so often I'd be surprised if yours is OK

i pulled all those connectors apart for a visual inspection and added a dab of heat transfer paste to the connector terminals with a toothpick. no burn marks anywhere, but i am sure they are coming.

In case any others want ideas...Same power wire comes up between tank/seat and the harness is (was) on my other scootsone bike to another. No drilling, special mounts, etc.. So you just pop the bag from Plus, this becomes the battery-tender plug-in point.

And as I mentioned, the 8500 can display voltage when not receiving a radar signal.

Works for me!
