Hey guys,

Last year I bought a 96 900ss in great condition.
Did an oil change about 3 months ago and noticing it starting to use oil which didn't was the case before.

Using 15w50 now as is stated in the maintenance manual.
Could it be that the bike had thicker oil before?
I could change to 20w50 but I'm a bit in doubt if that's a lot thicker.

Any other suggestions?

Ow and btw no visible oil leakage on the engine. So no problem with the oil change itself

It’s not smoking at all ? Not fouling plugs either ? Do you have a lot of oil blowing out the breather ? If it were mine I’d ride it until one of those things became intolerable. If your cylinder walls are in good shape a set of high compression pistons with rings costs about the same as stock rings will. I’d probably consider doing new guides while the heads were off. And a valve job. And some minor porting. And studs.

With a dry clutch you can use additives to reduce oil consumption but go easy with it as some motors, mine for one, didn’t have good drainage from the heads. That’s another thing to check if you take it apart. A mismatch between the head and cylinder oil return passages.

Valve stem seals would be my guess. Either way no matter if it's that or rings, the amount of work to get in there is nearly the same than changing rings, so just plan for both. As was said, good opportunity to give the top end a once over.

As long as it's not blowing blue smoke (or if it's only occasionally) - I wouldn't worry about it. Mine goes through stages of using oil. Some rides, it doesn't - others, it'll need a top up before the next outing. Just check your oil before you go for a ride, and if you can, carry a litre (quart there I guess) bottle as an emergency backup. I always have my tankbag on, so no problem there.

BTW - my bike's at 78,000kms, with the rings only having been changed at around 25,000kms due to my breaking an oil ring during reassembly from a broken studs repair.

I wouldn't change to 20W50. I'd use it if it was the only choice, and I was just topping up the engine to get home - but not for general use. Tight tolerances like thin oil when they're cold, and that's the only effect using the 20W50 would have - it'd be thicker than the 10W50 when cold, but not necessarily when hot.

Going to bring it to a Ducati specialist for changing heads and pistons.

Since taking of the heads and changing rings should be done, I might as well make sure the engine is better after it.

I'll keep you guys updated.
