Oil Filters

Ive been using Purlator Pure 1 filters on both my bikes. I'm picking up a MTS this next weekend and am wondering is there a Pure 1 that fits the MTS?

I work in a motorcycle shop too. My garage. :)

Since going to Ducatis I fucked with and bitched about the stock oil filters till I was blue in the face. The only way to keep them from leaking is to tighten them so tight you can't get them off. Plain and simple for some reason they suck. The K&N, tighten them one turn past first contact and they don't leak and are no problem to get off. The nut on the bottom just makes it that much better.

I work in a m/c shop. Our understanding is that the K&N oil filters are made by HifloFiltro. What we have been told by Hiflo is that the only difference is the nut welded on the end of the K&N. We stock oem filters but sell primarily Hiflo. I've been running Hiflo on my Ducati racebikes for about eight years with no issues.
You have me intrigued now as the Hiflo factory is in Thailand and k&N are marked right on the filter body as "Made in USA"

Common belief seems to be K&N air filters are made by Champion and oil filters are made by Hiflo but I've researched all over the internet for a definitive answer but can only find opinions and unsubstantiated claims to that effect.
Anyone have anything?

I've just emailed K&N and asked them for the facts.

Maybe they get the Hiflo filters in form Thailand (unpainted), and then weld the nut on the bottom.
A bit of paint, and some printing later.

Taddah, made in USA:D
No sure about that, as I export some of my stuff to Thailand and to be branded as Aussie made it has to have a very high percentage of local content (parts or labour), not sure what the American rules are on that.
Anyway with luck K&N will respond to me and clarify it for us (but I won't hold my breath on a straight answer)

That's a good study, pity it's out of date.. for instance the Ryco filter he gives a great review to is now made overseas and not in Oz and has had major issues over the last few years, so much so that many workshops now just refuse to stock them.

Yeah, the most recent update was in 2008. Here's the main page. http://www.minimopar.net/oilfilters/index.html
Plus, who can say the motorcycle filters are made by the same company as the car filters? After all, K&N and HiFlo do have very similar part numbers. Hmm...

I'd be interested in finding out who makes them, but would they really tell us?
Time will tell.

US rules are pretty strict for labeling. Anything imported has to have the country of origin clearly marked on the package. If it is significantly changed before retail sale then it can me marked differently on the retail package.

For instance, using Chinese lock washers on a US built part is still a US built item.

But if you buy a Chinese product, do nothing other than slap your company's sticker on the side and sell it as a US product you will have a big problem with US Customs. It needs to be SIGNIFICANTLY altered.
If that's the case with K&N in California then I'd be surprised if they were re-badging Hiflo filters from Thailand.

davy
Well there's only one way to know for sure.
Buy both filters and compare them side by side.
If necessary cut them apart for a visual and some weighing and measuring up of the filter media area.

One could post a review with some pics.
I'll even throw in an Amsoil EaoM 138 for inclusion in the review to see how it stacks up.
The K&N (kn-153) I used last year was stamped "Made in Thailand".
Prompted me to do this post: http://www.ducati.ms/forums/120-oil...o-filtro-similarities-beyond-coincidence.html

I did receive a reply from K&N, can't quote it directly due to their privacy policy on emails but the guts of it is that their oil filters are not made in the USA but are still made to K&N specifications but they didn't say where.

Which begs the question, why then are the black 153 filters boxed with a plastic seal on the open end with "Made in Thailand" printed on the box and the 1008 filter has no plastic seal on the end and is plainly marked on the filter itself as "Made in USA"

Fwiw, the pictures clearly show a comparison of the K&N filter element to the Oem one in a favourable light which is why I choose to use them.
The filter media is 40% bigger in area than Oem one and is a higher quality treated paper.

So do I, but I like to think I have a good reason for the decision and have done my homework on the matter, otherwise it's a bit like choosing a blue car because you like the colour better than the red ones.

I see no contradictions.
Clearly the 153 is made in Thailand as it's marked on the box, and confirmed by K&N(sort of).

The 1008 is made in the USA:)

The Amsoil EaoM 138 that I use comes in a box that's marked "contents made in the USA".
The filter itself is painted gloss black and only has very small printing on it at the very bottom which says 138 and what appears to be an 8 digit batch number for QC/QA beside it.
It's extremely well made in every respect when closely examined.

Yeah.
I know a sheila like that.
She only buys black cars(WTF)
She reckons that black is the only colour:(
Have always used K&N and wouldn't use anything else!
This nonsense posting is getting really annoying
