Ok I have a 96 m900 and time for my first oil change as the new owner. From what I have read and understand its recommended oil from the factory is 10w-40. I live in California in the central valley and it gets pretty warm here during the summer. Is 20w-50 a bad idea?

I know there is in any enthusiast group a huge ongoing/never ending debate of which oil is best. So I'm not asking brand, only weights.

Your Owners manual specifies 20W50 as the correct viscosity for Monsters operated on the hot days that you anticipate. Use a full synthetic oil.

my 2000 m750 specifies 20w50 for any weather, but optionally able to use 10w40 for colder weather. and it's my understanding they didnt start recommending 10w40 as standard until several years later
