Recently picked up my FT and am loving it so far!

I'm pretty new to bikes (just coming from a CB300F) and totally new to Ducati. I have a question about the RPM's and cruising speed etc.

I know this engine has a totally different character than the Honda but I'm nervous that I'm lugging it. I notice this in two areas:

1. When changing from 1st to 2nd it seems to feel a bit different if I don't shift quick enough or when starting off on a hill. Not lugging like jerking back and forth or shuddering or anything, but takes a while to smooth out. 1st gear seems quite short so I tend to change out of it quite quickly. I'm probably riding most of the time between 3k to 4.5k rpm's.

2. Also, was riding today doing about 60mph and was in 5th/6th, came to a bit of a hill and left it in 6th at say 60mph at just over 4k rpm's and it seemed fine but wasn't quite as smooth as when I dropped it down to 5th.

So when I'm experiencing this, is this more the character of the engine or am I lugging the bike. I'm trying to cruise at around 4k rpm and obviously lower around town. Trying to see what suits the bike better. Doesn't strike me as the type of bike that needs to be ridden at 5-6k in each gear to avoid lugging...Right?

Probably over thinking this, but worried I'll harm the engine during break in :|

Sorry for the newb question, just looking for some guidance.

What's an ft?
i ride all my bikes at 4 or higher but particularly the single and twin, they will lug under 4, have a look at max torque and power for your engine, max torque is a nice place to shift for normal riding or a bit spirited, max power for fast. Your owners manual should give you guidlines for running it in.
