new 999

Hey all, just brought home a 2003 999 bip. Not my first duc, but my first superbike. Pretty excited. Nothing literature-wise -- the guy got it out of the 'states (imported it to Canada) as a salvage title -- cosmetic. From what I can see, it was a base 999, and then rebuilt with a powder-coated frame (red), wheels to match, and then the panels were sprayed flat black with a Breil decal kit on it. Rides nice, but really "falls into turns" as per the reviews I have read. I found an owner's manual to download/print, and will be ordering JT's Desmoquattro book (had his due book for my ss). This is my first fuel-injected bike... a few questions:
1. Did the 03 999 come with radial m/c? I have them on this bike. :)
2. It has 4700mi -- the Winnipeg Ducati shop did a recent oil change, but it appears they overfilled the case (sight window filled with oil) -- likely put in 4.0L instead of 3.7 -- any simple way to drain out some oil?
3. I've got a pile of new SS oil filters left over -- best I can tell, I can use these on the 999?
4. Approaching 6000 mile service interval -- belts, plugs, valves, correct?
5. Any recommended aftermarket reusable air filter?
6. Will my STM slipper clutch from my SS work on this bike? How about the clutch master? I'm under the impression that a lot of Duc parts are interchangable.
7. Were the forks TiN coated from the factory? Mine are... :)

Remeber, I'm a fi newbie -- will a hi-flow air filter require a reprogrammed ECU? With my Keihins, that just meant some jetting fun... I'm under strict orders from my wife to:
a. sell off the SS
b. leave this bike alone (as in no mods)... but she might forget someday -- what is a good first modification?

I just fired you a pm. I'd like more info on those decals.
overfilling is very common, drain by removing the drain plug (quickly).you want the level no higher than halfway between the lines with the bike level and upright.i'm of the understanding all filters are the same for the last decade .your slipper should also work, keep in mind your xx9 basket is alum and a good piece.the stock air cleaners are washable,i treat mine same as k&n style (oil them).and most agree theres no ''better ''filter avalible.your forks are stock with the tin coating as well as the radial m/c's.these bikes have nice parts on them ,you might be shocked at the original msrp on them.in canada the early 999 bikes were about $25,000!in fact the 1198 has a lower msrp than the 03 999 did
as far as mods the most popular is gearing, with exhaust a close second, search here for a wealth of knowlage

Send me a p.m if you would like any parts for your 999, there are a lot of carbon fiber lightweight parts that are popular in our area.
I bought this bike from James, I only got to ride it for about an hour before putting it away for winter, I need a set of stock mirrors, also bolts for the passenger pegs, I was thinking of changing the decals but I get a lot of complements so maybe I'll hold off. When taking off the clutch sometimes chirps a bit, my monster never did this, is it worn out?
do the belts NOW, if they are still the original. It's a few years old and may be dry. You don't want to know how much it'll cost you if that belt goes. Belts are about $100 in US and it's a hour DYI job
He did the belts an valve's just before i picked it up

Might need a new clutch pack, basket.....probably need a good close up pic to tell. But it's the nature of the beast, mine still occasionally chirps abit and it's still relatively new.
999 list

Great bike, congrats!

If it were me:
1. put on your xray spex and check every last fastener, cable route, hose, etc from end to end. As a tossed bike, you need to know it'll not bite you w/o untoward input on your part. And that knowledge... priceless!

2. Ohlins x 3, starting with the damper if youre aggressive on the street, and set it up for your weight & riding style.

3. FULL exhaust, DP air filters & PowerCommander or dedicated ECU.

4. check that recalls for oil cooler & subframe were handled.

5.ENJOY. I's a very capable, well considered & put together machine.

I found an easy way to skim off overfilled oil. Unscrew the oil fill plug, find a trigger sprayer nozzle with attached plastic hose and shove it into the open oil fill. You can find these trigger sprayers attached to 32 oz bottles at any hardware store like Lowes or Home Depot. Open up the nozzle of the sprayer to full jet and start pumping the excess oil into the 32 oz bottle. I used it with full synthetic and it works like a charm, especially when the oil is warm. Couple times in the past I overfilled and tried the loosen the oil drain plug trick and both times had a hell of a time getting it back on before loosing oil, almost 1/2 quart once!

Thanks John,
I'll remember that one for future reference :)
John that's awesome!! I just overfilled mine by a bit and i don't want to risk loosing my brand new Motorex oil!! Thanksssssssss

Bbradsby, the previous owner completey stripped down the bike and had the frame powdercoated, so I trust that everything was put together correctly as he has done a lot of work on ducati bikes before, an ohlins damper is already on the list, Recalls have been done, not sure if I'm gonna do a full system, as long as I can get rid of the cats for heat reasons and make it louder than the clutch, then that's all I need
