You bike looks awesome. I am also restoring GT1000. Mostly done. Paint job is remaining. I have marving slip ons as well. Thinking whether should I polish them or paint. Any recommendation for clip on clamps? I think the one I have is incorrect.
Thanks!
Tall clipons are better suited for the GT’s fuel tank shape. Unlike the sport1000, the GT1000’s tank is wide at the top. So you can get clearance issues when turning with low Sport1000 clipons. My clipons were taken from an ST3.

Wow, how’d you do those engine side and clutch covers? Those are amazing.
Thanks! They are the OEM covers. I just took them off, polished them, and re-installed them back.
The logo was a bit tricky. I hand grinded the original before polishing and placed an old one I bought through ebay in its place.

very cool! what rims are those? are they steel or alloy? it makes it much easier to clean the rims with those you have on.
Allow Marchesinis.
They were red, taken from an ST.
A direct swap!
Found a set on ebay (less than $500), removed the paint and polished them for a vintage look.

This was the mod with the greatest impact on the bike's performance.
Front fork, exhaust-stacks-ecu, rear shock and brakes would follow. In that order.

was it a direct swap on wheels you didn't have to alter, mod anything to get those ST rims to fit your GT? Do you know if these rims will also fit the 2006 sport classic monopoto same as the GT?

Yes! Direct swap!
No modification required whatsoever.

They will also fit any bike in the Sportclassic lineup. In all those bikes the wheels dimension are exactly the same with the same center hubs. The only difference between OEM wheels is that the GT1000 had steel rims while the Sport 1000, Sport 1000s and Paul Smart LE had aluminum rims.

As I recall, when I did this wheel swap I found I needed a small spacer on the front axle. Forum member FastFrank fabricated and sold them. Other than the spacer the wheels were a bolt on swap.

In my case I didn't buy any spacer. But I replaced the forks, so the distance between fork legs could be slightly different.

Thanks for the info helps alot! Yes, i have the original OEM steel GT rims for backup, and currently have the OEM alloy rims on my sport classic, but I've always wanted to replace these rims for something easier to clean, cleaning the sport classic rims or any spoke rims is a nightmare, especially when you try to clean the deep nooks and crannies area of the rims.

What model year are these ST rim you have, are they steel or alloy rims, as I'm not too familiar with the ST range. Have you compared the weight differences between the OEM sport classic alloy rims with this ST rim which is ligher?

I like spoke rims, but cleaning them takes time, very annoying. I might buy the same rims you have that's if i can find a pair in good condition on ebay at a reasonble price, and will also polish them, these rims are much easier to clean and look great!

I can't remember what model mine were taken from. But as far as I know, all ST models have the same wheel dimensions. And they are all alloy (not steel).

Like you, I found out about them on this forum. I bought my pair after reading the stories of many forum members who had them installed. Here is a an old picture from @wasp1000

Some other members went the 10-spoke-999 Marchesini route, and I almost did. But that route requires many changes, including speedometer correction.

With the 5-spoke-ST Marchesinis you get a direct swap and they look more vintage than 10 spokes IMHO.

Some members have also gone the 3-spoke route. In my GT's case, I bought the 3-spokes RiderJeff had previously installed on his GT. If I recall correctly, I dropped 6 lbs of unsprung weight up front, and 10 lbs unsprung weight at the rear (I forget how much of the 6 & 10 is inner tube weight)... very noticeable improvement in handling. I also dropped maybe an hour of cleaning time with the 3-spokes vs the spoked steelies.
