Hello everyone,

I think I’m done modifying my GT1000 and am pretty proud of how it ended up.

Although I didn’t take pictures of the build process, I wanted to share with you how it looked when all started and how it looks now. After all, I took most of the mod ideas from this forum.

I asked the seller to take a picture of me on the bike they day I bought it.
The bike was pretty far from home, so I had to put 500 miles on my first ride.

First ride picture:

It looks really different now. After finishing the mods I rode it 100 miles on the back roads. Both handling and the amount of time grinning improved dramatically.

Latest ride picture:

Fist mod to pop out is the new color.
I was fortunate enough to find a brand new original black tank. Some might ask: Why change it? The reason is that although I think the red is nice, the black tank seems smaller (optical illusion). I also think that the logo location is better in this tank model. And lastly: I just like black for the GT1000.

Second obvious mod is the exhaust.
Another forum member sold me a Marving Slip-on set (Thanks Roadie). I polished it and placed it along with a nice set of Corse Dynamics Velocity Stacks and an ECU reflash.

I wanted a more aggressive stance and initially installed a clubman handlebar.

Unfortunately the riding position was not comfortable for me with the clubman and ended up ditching it to replace it with ST3 clip-ons. I also replaced the top triple with one without handlebar holes. Riding position is now very similar to a Sport Tourer

The stock front forks were initially replaced with forks from an S2R monster. But I came to learn in another forum thread that they were not really fully adjustable (really disappointing). So I sourced a nice set of 999 forks and bored both the top triple clamp and the clip-ons.

Wheels were replaced with a polished set of 5 spoke marchesinis. Front brakes are now 4p gold brembos with spiegler black lines. The fender is an OEM shortened carbon fiber one (painted) from an S4RS.

I made the Tail Tidy myself by reducing the OEM mudguard to its minimum possible dimensions. Turn lights are watsens sourced from our forum sponsor JC.

Front turn lights are also watsens from JC. He also provided the Gauge Lowering Bracket and the idea of powdercoating the bracket in black.

Mirrors are stainless steel bar-end Halcyons. They provide great visibility and I like the way they look. They can also be folded-in when the bike is parked.

This is by far the best tail tidy I've ever seen. I've been messing with mine forever (since I got the bike in 2007 really...) and have never been satisfied. But this looks perfect.

Do you have more pictures of the process of putting it together? did you cut it yourself?

I have watsens and a POSH light that's a bit similar to yours, but I really dig the use of the stock GT fender... I will be scouring eBay for one of those shortly.... ;)
Unfortunately I didn't take pictures of the process. I was not sure it would end up right when I started.
Other forum members might appreciate if you post photos of your's in the making.

The procedure is quite simple really:

For the mudguard:

1) Mark with tape the OEM mudguard with the final length you are looking for.
2) Cut the mudguard close to the tape with a saw (Leave it a little longer at this point).
3) Get close to the final dimensions with a grinding wheel.
4) Give it the final dimensions grinding it with a coarse sandpaper over a table (that way you will get an even flat finish).

For the mudguard bracket:

1) Place the chopped mudguard in its place with the OEM bracket.
2) Fix a generic license plate holder to the bracket. I used the top thread meant to hold the OEM stop/turn lights set and drilled another fixing point. Fixing points will depend on the plate holder you choose. I chose a license plate holder with a stoplight extension and bent it slightly to get the right stop light angle.
3) Cut the mudguard bracket removing the part that extends beyond the license plate holder.
4) At this point your mudguard bracket will still have the full thickness due to the tubular nature of the bracket. To get it like mine, you will have to remove the steel from outer and lower sections, leaving intact the top. You want only a curved plate section extending beyond the mudguard's length. Mark the bracket and remove those sections carefully by alternating a saw and a grinding wheel.
5) When you are satisfied, get it painted.

Cheers!

Hi where did you get the oil cooler bracket?
It was taken from the same Hypermotard 1100 EVO I took the oil cooler from.

I removed the black paint on it and got it polished.

Cheers!

Excellent job on your build

In the seat swap thread you said that you put a Gota tank and a 1000S tank on the bike. Do you have any pictures of the bike with the new tank?

Thanks
Unfortunately not.
I am still undecided about the color the aluminum tank will get. Also, having the kids home have reduced to zero the time I get to work on my bikes in the garage.

You GT is up there with Fujinator's and RiderJeff's in my book! Thank you for sharing its evolution.

Questions regarding your front caliper upgrade... No issues with still using the stock front master? How would you compare the difference between stock and upgraded calipers with the stock front master? I sourced similar front calipers a while back and have held off on the upgrade thinking I should also upgrade the master when I do. I have not gotten around to pulling the trigger on a new master (yet?) without a little more data from folks who have swapped.

Thanks.
Thanks!

I've got no problems using the stock front master.
I replaced the calipers along with the allow wheels. I guess that the improvement was attained by both the lighter wheels and the calipers, but I experienced a great difference in braking power.

I got later a nice used set of clutch master and the front master brake to match the calipers. But I have not installed them. To be honest, I really don't feel the need to.

You bike looks awesome. I am also restoring GT1000. Mostly done. Paint job is remaining. I have marving slip ons as well. Thinking whether should I polish them or paint. Any recommendation for clip on clamps? I think the one I have is incorrect.
Thanks!
Tall clipons are better suited for the GT’s fuel tank shape. Unlike the sport1000, the GT1000’s tank is wide at the top. So you can get clearance issues when turning with low Sport1000 clipons. My clipons were taken from an ST3.

Wow, how’d you do those engine side and clutch covers? Those are amazing.
Thanks! They are the OEM covers. I just took them off, polished them, and re-installed them back.
The logo was a bit tricky. I hand grinded the original before polishing and placed an old one I bought through ebay in its place.
