Well, like you say, we lack evidence on those large airboxes.

What numbers did you get with your large box ?, and any other mod ?

Cheers

BTW: are you going to Knutstorp monday with Ducceklubben ?

While I haev not seen direct back-to-back comparisons on these bikes between large airboxes and stock boxes, there IS plenty of evidence to support the assumption that larger-than-stock boxes work well with these bikes:

1. Corse race bikes have larger boxes than street versions
2. Matt's 996 shows HUGE midrange for that config, despite mild SPS cams.
3. The Hypermotard makes less power (about 5 BHP) than the Multistrada primarily because of its smaller airbox.

It would be cool to see a direct comparison. I will post my results, but this will not be for many months. (No airbox vs stock airbox vs big airbox), on a 996 with 999 testastretta motor.

Quick update, in case anyone is waiting for my dyno report.

Bike went to the dyno Thursday :D - and dropped onto one cylinder :( . This is a problem that appeared and dissappeared previously, before I could identify it.

I will put up a new thread once the problem is sorted, and the bike mapped and dyno'd.

Tom: Nice links, btw did you use Pistal pistons in the latest rebuild ?

Old Baldy: I am sure that a larger airbox is beneficial for the engine, but I an very interested to see just how much one should expect from it.

Spin: strange issue your are struggling with, ignition related or unknown ?

BTW, I saw that EVR are selling large airboxes out of i
Italy for som 800 EUR for my 998, so I just might buy one instead building one during the winter.

Cheers

800 Euro is still $1600'ish... waaay too steep for my blood.

If anyone knows where to find them for under a grand or has plans to make one let me know. I'll put money on a down payment.

Thanks

Thanks, the pistons are one off made from mahle materials.
Tom,

What compression were looking to get with those pistons(after squish set, noticed you are using .2 gaskets)?

I ordered some Pistals' for my 996 and have the stock gaskets and som .2s' also, wasn't sure which to use, yet. Also have some questions regarding valve shims on head rebuilding. You in the PHX area? PM me

Sorry for the hijack guys

Very very nice.

How was the autotune function ?

I'm going to try the Autotune on my racebike, (fitted with a Nemesis) during the spring.

How many runs did you have to perform before you were happy with the result ?

Cheers

Used the Autotune function only on the vertical cylinder on the dyno, RPM range up to 6500rpm at all throttle positions, was great as you can physically watch the the fuel setting being altered to match the desired A/F preset. :D

Hope to when i have time, get the bike back on the Dyno and do the same for the Horizontal cylinder.

WOT runs the Autotune doesnt seem to be able to lock a cell quick enough, so we just used the Gas Analyzer set up on the dyno and tweaked manually.

I also have a recently purchased 999R for the track, the bike came with a Nemesis. After a Track day I found the tune that came with the 999R to be pretty good.

Again, when i have time, I will get a dyno run on the 999R see how it all looks.

Well, have had a set of 102mm bore barrels + Pistals installed + Bursi Intake stacks.
Piston crowns plus valve heads/combustion chamber/ports all ceramic coated.

Picked up 3hp over previous stock bore/intake stacks.
Dyno chart coming soon..

Was a little bit disappointed with the numbers but the low/mid range is above an 1198 dynoed on same dyno. Makes an interesting ride, particularly coming out of corners.

Thoughts on output point towards the cams (2005 999S) being the bottleneck.

Not to sure how many other options are there for Testastretta Cams apart from R/RS.
Might just leave it be and enjoy it...

Yummy! Those Pistal piston are a work of art, I didn't want to even install mine....just mount them and put them on my desk..:D
I have a 2003 999 w/ a shallow sump teststretta engine. I bought the same kit and 999-S cams, Termignoni 54mm full exhaust ECU, PCIII. Had FBF do the install along w/ some discretionary porting, mapping, etc. I wanted to keep my 999 streetable, w/ midrange power instead of having it all come on the top end. I was advised to leave the bottom end alone as both BCM and FBF felt it was more than stout enough to handle the HP of this kit, but the top end is entirely new....new valve guides, replaced 1 rocker, etc... FBF dynoed my 999 at 149hp and 86ft.lbs torque. Pretty decent numbers w/ a Termignoni slip on exhaust. Since I have installed a Termignoni 54mm full system, again trying to preserve the strong midrange. The exhaust made a huge difference in the way the bike performed, I was shocked....so money well spent. Mr. Ferracci suggested I bring it back in after break-in for re-mapping and I need to do that as I've added a full exhaust after the bore kit install.
Not sure how much more horsepower/torque I picked up over the slip on. I'll see when I get it re-mapped....my guess probably 4-5 HP..

Dyno setting up for the Nemesis did take many hours (and $$$). Running with ceramic coating really seems to make a large difference in the fueling.

Got 141hp with I think 80ft/lbs torque.
Only have 500km's on the engine, so possibly pick up some more power with time.

If I done it again I wouldn't go with a Nemesis, there isnt enough experience where I live.
MoTec would be my choice, works out to be around same price with many people having knowledge on the ECU's operations.

theres a build thread on here about a 998s which has similar mods and makes good power, i'll see if i can find the dyno reports for it.

Great bike BTW!
