Hi folks,

Been living in Abu Dhabi for the last 9 1/2 years and as I am moving back to sunny Melbourne in a couple of weeks and thought I should introduce myself and say hi. Have not done a lot of riding in the past but got my license while in the UAE and did some riding both there and while working in the UK.

Just over a year ago I found a MY1998 M900 Monster that had been sitting in an underground garage for 4 years. Heat, lack of use, idiot previous owner/mechanic and careless drivers meant that she was pretty knackered but at 7000AED (about $1700 at the time) meant that she was enough of a bargain that I bought her. I moved her into the house and started rebuilding. Basically everything except the engine and gearbox was pulled apart and either reconditioned or replaced plus full service including carb rebuild, belts, valve adjustment and all the usual stuff. It was a tight budget with a lot of searching for good second hand parts and doing work myself but it was great fun and really loved it. I did wonder what I had got myself into a few times especially when I came across things like the fuel sender and nut missing and instead sealed with a lump of araldite the size of your fist or the carb rebuild the previous guy had done that involved removing all the gaskets then drilling jets/emulsion tubes etc and then putting them back together with out gaskets. List goes on and on.

Anyway as I said moving back so need some advice.

1 - I am having to convert my license to a Vic one and it looks like they won't recognise my UAE or International one so will have to do a course and 3 month learner permit before I can go onto an open license. Who do you recommend for courses in Melbourne? I am going to be in Sunbury so prefer not to traipse all over the city to get to a course. I would like to do the whole range of courses from beginner through to advanced as most of the riding I have done has been backstreets on the monster in the UAE or cruising round country lanes in the UK. and of course other then time in the UK all my driving/riding has been on the wrong side of the road so good to go back to basics again.

2 - I have an Arai RX-Q bought in the US. It's SNELL and DOT rated but I am not sure if it legal to use in AUS as it was not purchased in AUS. I sent off a query to VicRoads but no response. Any ideas?

3 - I am importing my bike with me and am running SilMoto highrise exhausts and open clutch. How have people gone with rego and roadworthy with aftermarket exhausts and open clutches? do they actually check for noise with a dB meter or is it "that's too loud" based on how they are feeling on the day?

#1 - dunno about Vic.

#2 - the helmet will not be legal here. It has to have an Australian Standards sticker on it. Bullshit IMO and reeks of protectionism in the local market to prevent us buying world class helmets at international prices. I bet Rossi etc. don't have an Oz standards sticker on their helmets.

#3 - I am guessing Vic will be the same as NSW. In NSW the bike would have to go for a Blue Slip inspection. Member cjeff here had his bike fail due to cans that did not have the dB rating on it. I lent him my stock ones and it passed.
Clutch cover - not sure. Pretty sure they will look for the manufacturers dB test data on the cans. In theory anything that is not as the bike was when put through Australian Design Rules for compliance could constitute failure.

I am sure once the bike gets here you will be able to borrow stock cans with brackets and a clutch cover if you post up a request. You will only need them for a short period and install/removal time should be an hour or so for on and off.

Bummer about the Ls but at least it is not the full monty L and P process.

Hey Punch thanks for the advice.

Really craps me out that they will want to stop me using my 6 month old helmet just because it has not got a sticker. Paid $300 brand new from the US including shipping to the ME and have not seen one for under $700 back in AUS. What do the guys who get custom paint jobs on their helmets do? Take the sticker off and replace after? Do they have the same attitude to the rest of the riding kit or just helmets?

I don't mind the license issue and doing the courses and am actually looking forward to them, I just don't want to have to spend hours traveling to a decent riding school as I will be working shifts so time off will be recovering from them and doing family stuff that I miss out on while working nights or weekends. Will look at some of the other bike forums and see if anyone has some recommendations.

The other issue is making sure the school has their own bikes as don't want to have to fork out for a bike for the learner part only to sell it a few months later. Having said that I have seen a couple of full fairing 400SS and similar that are LAMS approved and would be fun. I just have to convince the ministry of finance that I need one!!!

I have sent emails off to a couple of Sil Moto agents to see if they can get me a copy of the specs of my exhaust including the dB rating. I also have the closed clutch cover that I can pop back on for the inspection. The noise of the open clutch and the carb induction is louder than the exhaust at idle!! Because it's a personal import I don't know how thoroughly they will go over the bike, probably very, so will try and find a sympathetic testing station. I am going to have a chat to the station first and see what the best way forward is. It might be worth just taking it in there after chatting to them as is and see what they say needs doing and then swapping over those parts.

There are a number of non-standard parts like rearsets, clutch cover, exhaust, master cylinders and levers, mirrors etc or things that have been removed like the airbox, vent boxes etc so if they test against ADR compliance for that model I will be spending a lot of my off time putting it all back to standard.

Anyway thanks for the info and I will post about my trials and tribulations on here as I jump through all the hoops.

Hi Simon,
I live in Craigieburn, which is close to Sunbury.
You can go to HART, 2hich is the Honda center or use Armstrong in Thomastown. I used them. You will also find a list of accredited schools on the vicroads website.
Can't comment on the other items, but I haven't heard about people being fined for not having a sticker on the helmet. So it will be a chance you'll have to take and you can get fined.

Netrider is another forum you maybe able to find a lot of legal bike related information. They have regular weekly rides as well.

Not wishing to be a scare mongerer ....
It is not about being fined for no sticker. An insurance company could potentially reject a claim due to damage due to a non-compliant helmet.

As it is 3 months I would buy something cheap that will retain value.

I would not worry about changing the trick bits.

You might want to search the net for importing a motorcycle into Victoria so you get the paperwork right. I found stuff ages ago for NSW. There are companies that specialise in helping with importing. Maybe it is worth spending some money on letting them handle the paperwork and inspection and you do the transport.

Hey Johan,

I will be booking into the HART Somerton school in Craigieburn when I get back by the looks of things as it does seem the easiest to get to. Thomastown bit too far and the Tullamarine HART only do training on the weekend and as I will be working shifts including weekends I will need to do the training courses on weekdays as well. I did see the list on the VicRoads site but have been in the UAE too long and am used to everyone being accredited but only 1 in a 100 being able to meet and maintain the standard and then 1 in 10 of those actually being good at their job! As a result I am a tad skeptical when I see the word accredited. I will also have a look on Netrider and see what they have to say.

I think I will try and sell my helmet before I leave (not much time left only 10 days left till I climb aboard the Freedom Bird) and then get another when I get back. If not then will just use it and see what happens I suppose until I can afford another one.

I'm a member of the Desmo Owners Club in the UAE and wanted to join the equivalent back home. I saw the Ducati Owners Club of Vic and have spent a few hours going through the website but will have to wait until I return to Melbourne to join as I don't yet have things like phone numbers, credit cards and most of the other stuff that I needed to register.

I really miss the club, car and bike scene from home. We were heavily involved in Targa Tasmania for the first 5 years as well as the MG clubs in Tasmania and WA. Victoria was always things like Winton Historics, Sandown Historics, Geelong Speed Trials and Philip Island was everything including the Superbikes/MOTOGP. We also did as many touring/navigation/tarmac rally events as we could in our MGB wherever we were living. We have had the MG since '95 but it's spent the last 9 years in the in-laws garage and only been driven 3 times!! Its now been dragged out of her sleeping place and is currently with Steve at Precision Autos in Summerhill, Tas. Great mechanic and one of only a couple of people who have really been able to tune the car properly. My daily transport will be a shared between the MG and the Monster. The car scene is starting to grow in Dubai over the last couple of years with people getting "real" cars (i.e. old stuff like mustangs, escorts, MGs, 260Zs etc but only a few and only for display and the occasional trackday) but the racing tends to be either brand new Ferrari/Porsche/Lambo/KTM/GTR/Lotus etc (way out of my price range) or 30yo Civics ($15,000+ for a car that you use 6 times a year or 12 if you do trackdays as can't register a modified car in Abu Dhabi) and again only really in Dubai. I have done a few trackdays at Yas Island and Dubai Autodrome (they usually have 1 a month in the cooler months) in my R32 Golf but at $200+ for 3 X 30min sessions it's only an occasional thing.

Bikes again have only started in the last couple of years but tend to be either KTM/BMW offroad stuff (they have started a good club and do runs, camps and meals) or the crazy locals on Honda/Suzuki/Yamaha drag-linked things and drag racing at up to 200kph through traffic doing 70kph is not really my idea of fun. Ducati Abu Dhabi started the DesmoOC this year and have had rides and meals etc which have been great but did drive home how much I have missed the bike/car club stuff and also spending spare time outside tinkering with the MGB and anything else I could find.

Sorry for the long posts but I am on "garden leave" until I fly out and only have 2 more small jobs to complete next week. Add to that it's Ramadan so all the food and most of the shops are shut during the day (no eating or drinking in public during daylight hours), my friends over here are either at work or on holiday overseas (you don't stay here during summer unless forced to), the wife and kids have moved home already oh and it's 43deg C outside at 9:30am. All that equates to being bored and having waaaay too much time to spend reading and posting on various boards.

If you look up 748girl on here, she is a member of the Victorian Ducati Owners club. I had dinner with a bunch of them on Phillip Island last year at the Mexican resturant in Cowes, seem like a good bunch of guys & girls.

Hi not to scare you but any bike post 1989 need to be ADR compliant, you may be better off selling it and buying a new bike here.
I have seen a few bikes for sale at half price as they cannot get any street registration due to lack of a ADR plate.
Its a bit like the Helmet scenario
Do a bit of a search of Ausy bike forums try PSB they have big support base.

Richard, agree about the helmet and I will be looking for one as soon as I get back. Annoying but don't want to be in a situation where the insurance company says no because the helmet is not Aus certified. As to the bike I will look around and see what there is. In the UK I was renting a Hoysung Crusier and also tried one of their 125cc race reps neither of which were particularly horrible so might see about one of those or the Apprilia 125cc also looks fun but the 400SS does float my boat. It basically comes down to cash and availability. When I get back with my training, setting up the house and everything else that is involved in moving countries it will probably not be until October/November before I get a chance to do the courses so I will have a bit of time to hunt around for the right bike even if it's one that needs some work.

I already have all the import permits, new VIN, import plate is waiting to be delivered etc from the DOT. Customs etc is being sorted by the moving company. The next time I see the bike will be at the collection facility in Tullamarine at the beginning of September all thing being equal. Once it's home, un-crated, running and things like mirrors installed the only thing I will have left will be the roadworthy. If I can get a company to help get that done then it might be easier so thanks for the link Craig I will give them a call when I am back and see if they can help me.

This may sound like the dumbest question but bear with me. Do you have to have a current license to register a car/bike? The reason I ask is that while we have been over here my license has expired a couple of times with the longest being for just over 2 years. I got it renewed in the end each time but the MGB was always registered and had even been renewed while I had an expired license. I would be interested to see if I am allowed to register the M900 while I am still on my L or if I have to wait until I get the full license before I am allowed to register it. There is no finite time for getting the bike registered as far as importing goes just not allowed to sell it within 2 years of importing so I am not worried time wise but just looking at the logistics. Again I have emailed VicRoads but no response.

Okay off to brave the heat and collect another ream of paperwork from the government offices here so I can get out of this sandpit.

With the import for road you are right WW. Post '89 you either have to own it and it be registered in the country you are a resident of for a minimum 12 months with you having access to ride it for a minimum of 12 months before the export date or do what I did and apply for a dispensation. Basically I had to fill in lots of government forms and then write a letter about why I should be given dispensation to import the bike for registration on Australian roads. In that letter you have to detail everything you can to make your case about why you should be allowed to import the bike. Mine was about 8 pages long with lots of photos and receipts attached to that. It took just on 9 weeks from application going in to getting approval. Once you have the approval you get all the paperwork including an import approval plate that holds your new VIN (they had to add 4 digits to the start of my VIN as it needed to be 17 long and the Euro ones in '98 were only 13 digits) then it can be registered anywhere as long as it meets the safety/noise/emissions requirements of each state which for me should mean the exhaust and probably headlight need to be changed. Having said all that with the way my move has gone so far I doubt it will be that easy or even achievable!!!

Used to be on PSB until the powers that be in the UAE decided that they were going to block the site as it had too much T&A for the locals to handle.

Right government offices are calling and want to get back before it gets too hot!

Licence to be able to register - not really sure on that one.
Proof of ownership and acceptable ID I expect.

You might be a 90 yo, no licence but can afford a chauffeur!

WW I think that even if the rego process turned to crap I'd keep the bike as a bit of fun for the track.

Richard I'm not that old and definitely not that rich but was thinking the same thing as far as the rego/driving went. Had a few friends who owned registered cars but either didn't have a license or were on the wrong category for the car (i.e. Learners with V8's) before I moved over here but seeing as it's been nearly 10 years figured someone will have managed to change the law. Will see what happens when I get back.

Just saw this as we have been away on holiday. HK - husband is now considerably poorer. 748girl has gorgeous new shoes (several pairs of) matching handbags and a lovely new dress (I am such a girl!!). He has new clothes too, but I just bought them and presented them to him. In between raiding the boutiques (which was my job, he doesn't accompany me - hates shopping) we did fit in some time with DOC HK - great guys!!

You might want to look at About Us they may be able to help you bring your bike in.

Your helmet won't be legal - Punch said so - might make nice garage ornament - sorry.

You would need OEM mufflers and a closed clutch cover for a RWC. Our police don't like open covers - ask me how I know.:mad:

Stay Upright are good for motorcycle courses - it was a long time ago though.

Get in touch with the DOCV when you arrive back. Will look forward to meeting you then.

Your Arai should have a removeable/replaceable liner so you just get one here giving you the AS/NZS 1698 label certification required.

I did that with my Corsair-V. The helmet sticker is no longer the only recognised compliance certification for helmets now and if a helmet only has that and no 1698 label they can be deemed illegal to wear. AMCN did an article on it a month or 2 ago.

At the end of the day it comes down to the oinker tho'.....

Hi Guys and Girls,

Commencing Vent:

Sorry I've been offline for a couple of days while I try and get the last of the jobs squared away but it's Ramadan and summer so it has been an exercise in futility! 4 working days left and have to close my bank accounts, transfer my money and cancel my working visa. Visa takes 2-3 days to cancel but can't be done until banks are closed and money transferred. Can't close banks until my work gives me my final payout and letter to the bank that I am no longer employed by them and it then takes 2 days to close the accounts. I have to transfer my money before I cancel my working visa otherwise not allowed to transfer the money!!!! Have been onto my work for the last 2 months to sort out the final payment so I can close the bank account etc but they are still faffing around and are now thinking that it will be Thursday when they send the money and the letter which gives me 1 working day to get banks closed, transfer the money and cancel my visa. At this stage it looks like my flight on the freedom bird is going to be delayed by a few days which will not make for a happy household in Melbourne where the kids and wife are waiting on my arrival. When we left Melbourne it took 2 weeks of organization to get everything done including packing the household stuff into storage, the house rented out, banks sorted, cancelling Medicare, registering as non residents etc. This process to move from the UAE has been going on now for 4 months.:mad:

748girl thanks for the link and lucky you with Hong Kong. There and Singapore are my favorite Asian cities and would love to live and work there but unfortunately it's a closed shop for my line of work so virtually impossible for expats to get in there.

I had tried a couple of the import companies about 6 months ago asking if they did imports for people already overseas moving home but all the ones I tried said they only did imports for people already in AUS so I would have to go down the personal import route and then once in AUS if I had any issues they may be able to help. If I have any questions or run into trouble I will look up the companies you guys have been good enough to give me the links for. I am hoping as I have all the paperwork it will be a relatively easy process with only a few things like exhaust, clutch cover and headlight needing to be changed.

I have the standard closed clutch cover so will fit that. I have to pull the clutch stack apart as it was juddering and not being happy the last time I rode her so probably needs the stack height checking/adjusting, while I do that I might do the quite clutch mod that I have been reading about which might help with the roadworthy noise issues. The last headlight I saw was $400 which seemed a bit rich. I have found a couple of bike wreckers who seem to have good second hand parts so will see what they have to offer when I get back. When I got my bike it didn't have the OEM mufflers so will see if I can borrow some for the roadworthy or buy a second hand set off gumtree/ebay etc. There are no noise restrictions for cars/bikes here so all the Harley guys run full open pipes with no baffles and the Ducati guys run Termis and again no baffles and throw the OEM ones on the scrap heap. They figure the noise gives you a fighting chance of the other muppets at least hearing you coming so they stop texting, open their eyes and look around.

As an aside we have the highest death rate per capita on the roads in the world (not something to be proud of), police do nothing about it. Earlier in the year the BlackBerry messenger service went down for 3 days which resulted in a 60% drop in traffic accidents. The service came back online and they made up for it by going 40% above average for the next 2 days!

Pirate thanks for the information I will try and get a back issue of AMCN with the article and have a read and see if it applies to my helmet. I put the helmet on the marketplace here but no takers so will bring it home and see what to do from there.

Okay off for more battles with work now.
