I once again find myself without a Ducati :(

Sold the ST4 and began looking for a bike that would be more comfortable for the fiance and I on longer trips, and I craved the creature comforts that can be found in newer bikes.

Enter the picture, my new-to-me 2018 Street Glide. Cruise control, ABS, Bluetooth, radio, GPS, etc... So far I've only upgraded seats (solo for me, wide pillion for her), added a removable backrest, and I've got some pipes and an intake on the way as well.


Eventually, once the prices drop a bit more, I'll find my way in to either an 1199 or 899 to get my speed fix again :)

Nice Putt! I don't know much about the "new" engine (Twin Cam) but I had a couple of Harleys years ago. 4 speed iron head Sportster ('84 XLX61) and an '85 FXRS with the very first model year of the Evolution engine.

Image #1 = 1984 Sportster

Image #2 = 1985 FXRS ... photo taken in 1986. The bike on the left is mine, but that's my "step uncle" sitting on it, and my stepdad on his FXRT (the one with the fairing). My stepdad and I had matching paint schemes as can be seen. My step uncle was a motor cop in Pasadena California for a whole bunch of years. He came to visit my parents so I let him take my FXRS out for the day so he could ride with my stepdad. I'll never forget how grateful he was for being allowed to put 400 miles on my bike that weekend. He called every motorcycle a "motor", probably going back to being a "motor cop" for so many years. I put 5,000 miles on that thing in one year. Never one single issue with it.

Being a motor cop is still a dream of mine, been pushing Chief for years to let us get a bike!

We did the same thing at my dept. Pushed and pushed ... finally got the approval and the money from The City. One of our patrol offcrs went through the California training course for motor cops. His very first day on the bike he was hit, seven days in a coma before he died. In a small department like ours that kind of thing hits very hard.

South East L.A. area is no place for motor cops. Too many dumass clueless drivers, most of whom are unlicensed ~undocs~ (undocumented immigrants). Friggin sewer for the most part.

At my Dept it would truthfully be more of a gimmick/crowd pleaser for parades and festivals. Our jurisdiction is very small, despite the high call volume + low officer numbers (12 patrol, 2 road Sgts, 2 Detectives) = never gonna happen.

Our city population is under 8k, but we're surrounded by the larger cities, so our call volume is that of a department covering 75k people. Way different up here than by you, I think the most calls I've taken in a shift between my partner and I was about 25-28 if memory serves, and that's VERY rare.

Since the start of this year my gun has been unholstered about a dozen times, never had to pull the trigger though.

I did the motor cop thing in Missouri in the mid 70s and learned very quickly that a motorcycle was definitely not the proper tool for law enforcement. We were provided with a Kawasaki 1000 which could best be described as the quickest way to earn an early retirement! The huge radio pack positioned above the rear fender caused the front end to be too light causing severe head shake at any speeds over about 55 mph. I was never so glad to get back into my trusty Chrysler 440 Magnum after tempting the gods on that awful thing. Perhaps in a strictly urban environment they might have a purpose, but why increase the risk in what is already a very sketchy way to earn a living? Sadly in St Louis just last month two motor officers ran into each other seriously injuring one while escorting the funeral of another officer killed on duty.


Your comments briefly took me back to those days of yesteryear...some good memories...some not.

Those demons try to chase us down every waking moment, and every night while sleeping. All we can do is take each day for the precious thing that it is. It took me nearly twenty five years to learn how to keep them out of my conscience. That's a quarter decade I won't get back. Slowly, but certainly, I've been learning how to live one day, one moment, one fleeting second at a time. Motorcycles are God's gift that allow us to live in "the now" so the past doesn't dominate our futures.

Member *Ryan ... keep on keepin' on. You're in my thoughts, hopefully this toxic culture we're immersed in with the anti-cop sentiments, that fellas like yourself face each day in uniform will spin down the drain with the rest of the unwanted garbage. The sooner the better. In this era of "cameras in every hand" I'd not want to do the job now. I salute your willingness to deal with it and try to help others in spite of the flack.

You may discover that there are a great number of deeply supportive people among the Harley folks. There's a shit ton of vets and LEOs in the group. Bask in the warmth.


You're an honorable guy, we need more like you.
