My left and right calf just starts to sting with heat from the exhaust.

I wear leathers and I'm tough enough but was interested if anyone fabricated a clamp on heat shield out of aluminum located around the shock system.

My exhaust system is a full zard so maybe it might get a little warmer over stock.

Or is wrapping the way to go

try carbon fiber shieds, they tend to run cooler than alum.
what are you riding?
i changed the heat shield on my 998, and my right heel does't cook anymore.
Is the exhaust stock?

I just wrapped my Termi's (motowheels) and added a cf heatshield (shift tech) to my 749 and it has helped alot. Jus' my $0.02 :)
I used to get blisters on my calves riding my old 996. My new bike has ceramic coated pipes. Seems to reduce heat a lot and no more burns. Apparently there is a new coating you can get that is even better but know what it is, sorry.
i can ride mine without any heat discomfort issues,hell i even took off the heat sheild.are you sure your engines temp is correct(in light of recent temp and motor catastrophy posts)or way lean?
The ceramic coating reduces external temps by about 200 degrees. The wrap will reduce by almost twice that. If you use a CF heat shield, put some insulated adhesive foil on the back.

I ceramic coated my 916SP pipes and then wrapped the head pipes up to where they came together. It reduced the heat significantly coming off the rear cylinder and on the belly pan.
Just Wrapped my 749

Once the temp hit 75, I had a huge issue with radiant heat on the back of my legs. It wasn't making me sweat, it was actually painful. I dropped the exhaust and wrapped the pipes--excited about getting back to riding. Much to my dismay, the wrap did absolutely nothing to reduce the heat.

What eventually worked was going back to premium gas. The engine temp stayed the same (between 185 and 215) but there was a significant reduction in radiant heat. The trade-off is less gas mileage but definitely worth it.

Anyone had a similar experience? I've also been thinking about replacing the coolant with water and water wetter to get a little more heat out.
Added benefit of wrapping and coating

Anything that keeps heat in the pipe will help keep exhaust velocity high. So wrapping and coating should be a performance enhancer..in theory

On long rides [2+hrs straight] my termi'ed 749 gets unpleasantly hot in the 'seat region'. I was planning on fixing the entire seat & tail unit underside with that adhesive thermal tape stuff [Thermotek?] to reduce this problem.

The exhaust wrap I used is from DEi. I picked it up at Summit Racing. This wrap (and all brands I think) are non-adhesive. You basically wrap them really tight and clamp them with stainless zip ties. Do a forum search on exhaust wrap for more info.

I hope the gas thing works out for you. I was really bummed about the heat before I tried that. I'm doing the water wetter project this week as well. That should help even more.

Also, it would be interesting to see if different coolant could have enough of an effect on the engine that the exhaust gasses are noticeably cooler- good luck!
