Ok I saw something about this before and cant find it now. I have three Gas tanks for my 996. Two are about 14.5 inches across at the widest point and one is about 16.5 inches. What is the deal here. Is the 16.5 some weird limited tank worth millions? I would like the fast facts on tank myth and legend if any one knows about this.

Someone may have sat it and compressed it a wee bit-mushrooming it out...lol. IDK. I would like to know more as well. This is a bit interesting.

916 tanks are wider. In 1999 the tanks were redesigned and made narrower.

In addition the wider tank looks slightly flatter along the top where as the others are rounded.

Did the capacity change? more capacity -> more range.. :)
I believe the capacity remained the same. I think the change was made to limit damage to the tank when a bike goes down.

When I bought my 99 748 one of the previous model changes listed was a "new tank." I replaced it with a 916 carbon tank and was able to notice the slight difference.

I attached a brochure from 1999.
