I´d say 14/40 or 14/41 if you use on the road..

Maybe 42/43 rear if your a track junkie (like me).

I run 14/40 on my 748 whick still gives me a topspeed of about 240 kmh/150 mph, which is plenty fast enough..

Correct sprocket 14 (front) 41 (rear)

from dyno runs that I have seen the results of, the 749 makes the most power throughout the powerband with a 14 in the front and a 41 in the rear.

According to www.sumofallparts.net,

"Stock sprocket sizes for the 999 are 15 tooth front 36 tooth rear which has a final drive ratio of 2.40 Our optimum ratio is 14 tooth front 38 tooth rear which has a final drive ratio of 2.71. For the 749, optimum gearing is a 14 front and 41 rear.

Extensive testing on the street, eddy current dyno and on the race track have proven that this is the optimum ratio for your bike, however you may choose any combination of front and rear sprockets for your application.

Also, you might want to consider switching to a 520 conversion to reduce some of the reciprocating mass (ie. weight).

Best of luck

It's a thiner lighter chain setup. I just put in a 14/42 setup and I really like the power. Gas milage took a hit though. The throttle is more sensitive now also.

Ok i am stupid.... what is the 520 conversion
520 is a thinner hence lighter chain and sprocket.downfall is weaker, but under a 1000 cc is thought to be safe.fwiw change your rear and when you need to replace a worn out set then convert.on my 749 i can run the 41 rear and swapback to the 39 using the same chain,a nice option when doing higher speed runs,as opposed to my usual under 100 twistys

I have a 14 on the front of my 999...How much bigger than the stock 36 rear can I go with the stock chain? Is the chain long enough for a 40?

hey kaos, do you run the stock # of links in your chain? Just curious. I assume you have to move your rear wheel slightly forward when switching to the 41 to maintain the correct chain slack?

I doubt you'll get a 40 without a new chain, 38 easily as the combo is only +1 on 15/36.

This chart shows neccessary chain length for a 916 series, can't imagine the 999 being any different.

Also check out http://www.xs4all.nl/~ator0437/GRSSC.htm for a calculator which has the 999 figures in a preset
