I have an unnumbered (i.e. not one of the 500) 2002 996r. How many extra were made and does anyone know the story behind it ?? Thank you

This post of mine in a thread over on Ducatiforum.co.uk should clear things up. Also, I have a large registry of 996Rs which backs it up. It's also complete non-sense that all were sold out online. Ducati only took a certain number of pre-sale reservations online, and simply that amount did sell out. The rest were sold through dealerships that started taking orders on Jan 1st of 2001 for BOTH strada or corsa versions.

500 serialized Strada, and either 198 or 200 non-serialized Corsa. Again, definitive as confirmed by my registry, Ian's book, and the letter to Michael Mam from Ducati on the subject in the video above.

The lowest serialized bike in my registry is #0003 and the highest is #0496. I have at least 20-30 bikes in each range of hundred so it's pretty spread out and a good sample data representation. I have a total of 32 of the non-serialized bikes in my registry as of today.

Lastly, keep in mind these are world-wide total production numbers. So it's not like many other Ducati bikes of the time where there is a set of serialized bikes for each major market around the world. There are absolutely NO duplicate serial 996Rs from Ducati, just one world-wide set of them. Same for the 998R except ALL of the 700 were serialized and it says on their triple plaque they are XXXX/700 as they were all strada models.

Disclosure: I also own a 996R and I'm more concerned with actual truth than I am about value being diminished by it becoming more widely known there are 700 in total and not just 500. - That said, I doubt it would affect the value. In fact, I paid what I did for the 2 of mine knowing the correct info.

Well, as I said I've been in contact with Ducati as well. I've also got an e-mail that I can read out as that man did. They told me however that only 313 numbered ones were ever made and another 120 unnumbered. So I guess they don't really know it themselves.
Yeah, they are retarded on that one, plain and simple. If there are only 313 serialized 996Rs, then why do I have dozens more in my registry right up to #0496? Perhaps Mario answered your email on a Friday afternoon lol.

Yeah mine has an engine number substantially higher than 500.. actually higher even than 600 so I'm definitely in the 700 rather than 500 produced believers... I would really like to know if mine originally came with a plaque though, perhaps not as it seems it's well up there in the numbers produced going by the engine number...

PM me if you want deets to add mine to your registry :)

PM sent. Thank you.
Just pinged in a request for info & will report back here what they say.
Well after a bit of to & fro with DMH to prove I was me and that I owned the bike, I just received this reply:

Concerning your bike, we kindly confirm you that it is a red 996 R Europa Model Year 2001. Frame and engine serial numbers coincide.

As per your request, regarding the plate number, we kindly confirm that it is higher because other 996 bikes were also produced in non-European markets.

We thank you for your kind attention and remain at your disposal.
Somewhat confusing, as would seem par for the course, however would lead one to believe that the ca. 700 number 996R's produced is correct. Accordingly, as my engine number is well north of 600, it's a late one and officially without a plaque on the top yoke, so that's settled that for me then 😎

A very Italian multi-translated response there for sure 🤣 Seems like everyone I know with a 996R who has done this gets a slightly differently phrased response. Just depends on who reads it, how they interpret your inquiry, how they decide to look up the info, how they feel like answering, and what translator they use lol. Probably a dozen other factors like when they had their last Espresso and if it's a Monday or Friday too.

@Neil66 I've added two additional 996Rs to my registry since I shared it with you; #0434 (NZ) and #0473 (IT).

Haha yeah - reminded me I’ve been so rude as to have forgotten to reply to them and say thanks!!

As they remain ‘kindly’ at my disposal I might add an inquiry as to total numbers produced to add further fuel to the fire of “only” 500!

Well I asked and got this back:
Concerning your last email, we kindly inform you that we have provided you with all the information we can and are authorised to release.

We thank you for your kind attention and remain at your disposal.
So none the wiser - seems you're right @92GTA - depends on who, when, what & where, oh well... 🤷‍♂️

Wow, that's kinda crazy. Oh well. I guess we will continue to trust in what Ian Falloon's book says, what my registry proves, the letter Michael Mam received from Ducati, etc. etc. - It's obvious to me that the old wives' tale of 500 total came from magazines that were misquoting back in the day, of which I have many. They all mention 500 planned units, but I believe when Ducati provided them with that number, they were only referring to the serialized strada units. So with that said, I'll drop this here straight from Ian's book to close out the thread and for anyone else who may find it in the future:

996 R 2001 Testastretta Red Internet - 191 (included in this batch were 56 UK Strada versions assembled on Jan 29th, 2001)
996 R 2001 Testastretta Red - 120
996 R USA 2001 Testastretta Red - 60 (un-numbers Corsa versions)
996 R Aus 2001 Testastretta Red - 40
996 R Jpn 2001 Testastretta Red Internet - 113
996 R Jpn 2001 Testastretta Red - 50
996 R 2001 Testastretta Red Internet - 56
996 R 2001 Testastretta Red - 30
996 R France 2001 Testastretta Red Internet - 13
996 R France 2001 Testastretta Red - 25

698 world wide
