This post of mine in a thread over on Ducatiforum.co.uk should clear things up. Also, I have a large registry of 996Rs which backs it up. It's also complete non-sense that all were sold out online. Ducati only took a certain number of pre-sale reservations online, and simply that amount did sell out. The rest were sold through dealerships that started taking orders on Jan 1st of 2001 for BOTH strada or corsa versions.
500 serialized Strada, and either 198 or 200 non-serialized Corsa. Again, definitive as confirmed by my registry, Ian's book, and the letter to Michael Mam from Ducati on the subject in the video above.

The lowest serialized bike in my registry is #0003 and the highest is #0496. I have at least 20-30 bikes in each range of hundred so it's pretty spread out and a good sample data representation. I have a total of 32 of the non-serialized bikes in my registry as of today.
Lastly, keep in mind these are world-wide total production numbers. So it's not like many other Ducati bikes of the time where there is a set of serialized bikes for each major market around the world. There are absolutely NO duplicate serial 996Rs from Ducati, just one world-wide set of them. Same for the 998R except ALL of the 700 were serialized and it says on their triple plaque they are XXXX/700 as they were all strada models.
Disclosure: I also own a 996R and I'm more concerned with actual truth than I am about value being diminished by it becoming more widely known there are 700 in total and not just 500. - That said, I doubt it would affect the value. In fact, I paid what I did for the 2 of mine knowing the correct info.
