I had another forum member offer to go look at a bike I found out of state, I also spoke with the technician who serviced the bike. Get lots of high res pictures.

Is it possible the bike has a California history? If so they will try to get you to pay fees for years it wasnt even in state. Does the bike have fewer than 7500 miles on it? If not better bring an Allen key to remove the bolt holding the tank down, they will want to look at the smog sticker, be prepared to point out the motor to the dip shit looking for the serial number (no kidding)

If you get it do not go to the el cajon DMV, let me repeat, do not go to the el cajon DMV.

Good luck with your purchase

I wired half the money, seller sent me the title and a bill of sale, shipped called me when he was picking the bike up, he verified condition and I sent the balance via PayPal while we were on the phone.

I suspect you can use the search tool and look for escrow companies that handle transactions like this

Talk to the guy on the phone, ask plenty of questions, listen to what he has to say and trust your gut. If he's cool and trustworthy, proceed. If there's anything about the deal or the seller you don't like, don't.

Bought my '07 in '09 on E-bay. I was very worried, never having bought anything so expensive long distance. I had a good feeling about the owner but....... Additionally, I was borrowing the money! Ended up my Banker arranged with the owner for him to send the Title to the bank and then the bank transferred the money to the owners account as the shipping company loaded the bike. Escrow companies are out there but you have to trust them too and pay them. In retrospect, if I was paying cash, I think the E-bay and Pay-Pal safeguards are pretty solid. My deal went so smoothly that the owner offered to split the shipping. I got my stock 1000s, with 300 miles, delivered from Maryland to Colorado, in perfect condition, for $7.600. It involved a few sleepless nights but all worked out great!

I also bought my 06 in 2009 off of ebay. She had 500 miles on the odometer. I shipped her from Miami to Los Angeles. I called the seller a couple of times to set up the payment and the freight. Based on the low miles, examining the photos, and talking to the seller I was not too concerned with the bike's condition. I just made sure I paid with a credit card to have some insurance.

I found someone willing to sell me an 06. And was wondering if there's a safe way to purchase it without actually flying there? Any help would be appreciated
I bought a 999 from out of state. I had the seller take the bike to the local Ducati dealer. I paid the dealer to perform an inspection and give me a report on the bike. Made a deal with the seller that I would send the dealer the cashiers check for the bike and if it past the inspection the dealer would give the check to the seller in exchange for the bike and appropriate paperwork. Had my shipping service pick up the bike at the dealer. Worked out pretty good.

i just bought a paul smart from a guy in colorado and i'm in washington DC. so yeah i was a little worried like you. first huge purchase ever not even laying a hand on it before i bought it. we talked thru email for a couple weeks before i actually talked on the phone with him and talked numbers. feel him out. talk to him. get to know him. turned out this guy wanted his PS to go to a good home so i was lucky he wanted to get to know me first before he decided to sell to him.

have him send a video of it. walk around and take as many photos as possible to send you. find out where he serviced it and talk to the tech.

ask the guy what he does for a living. if parties are willing to give up personal information then chances are there for the opportunity to build some trust.

i wired the money to this guy from my credit union. i wired the whole amount.. then he overnighted the title to me. felt comfortable to do it too. i mean this guy gave me his bank account number. for all he knew i could have been the shady one. 2 days later he took it to my shipper and its enroute as i write this! picking it up tomorrow.

all in all it was a pretty easy transaction. plus i got to know the previous owner a little bit in the process.

oh yeah- this was thru craigslist. big no no in my book. but because i took my time and went thru the steps. it worked out in the end. if your bike is on ebay then i say your pretty much covered. they have rules you know.. craigslist however is like the wild wild west. be as cautious as possible.
