Help me decide!! - Monster 1000S or 900 Super Sport

6467 Views 31 Replies 15 Participants Last post by  racerxcph
I have decided to take the Ducati plunge and have found two good (what I believe to be good that is) deals on two Ducati bikes:

- 2004 Monster 1000S ie with 4,900 miles fully stock. The price is $6,500.
- 1999 SuperSport 900FF with 13,000 miles, corbin seat, FSF pipes and carbon fiber clutch cover. The price is $5,000.

Both bikes are yellow and in great shape (the Monster is actually Mint with all paperwork and the SS900 is in very good condition with a couple scratches on the lower fairing and the dealer just did a full 12k service on it).

Both are great bikes and both are similar (but much superior) to two previous bikes I've owned in the past (a 1998 CBR 600F3 which I still own but will sell if I buy the Duc, and a 1986 Yamaha Fazer 700S). I just can't decide which one to buy. I don't know which one is the better deal. Since you guys are Ducati experts, can you provide me with the pros and cons of each bike and which one you think is the better deal?

Thanks!

My former SS is now up for sale. It is a '96 SS/SP with a 944 kit, hc pistons, Keihin 41 mm FCR's on Malossi intakes, lightened flywheel, billet clutch basket, DP CF cans, and a lot more. If anyone is interested ping me off list. Kevin in Oakland has it.

Damn, I had to run out to the garage to make sure my bike was not stolen and slightly modified by the thief. :D

Personally I'd get the Monster, mainly because I've always liked Monsters, especially the bigger ones ;) and I think it would be a better commuter (but, Hey what do I know I've got the most uncomfortable bike - ever ;) ) but the SS is good too - so it's down to you.

I live in San Francisco. I was going to suggest you check the nearest Craig's List or eBay. I have bought two bikes off Craigs and three off of eBay. Look at eBay and if you find something interesting, post us back.

Shipping is not an issue, as I have a professional shipper that can ship a bike coast to coast for $700 or less. I have used these guys three times:

On eBay, I'd start by entering "Ducati" as a search term, then "sort by highest price first" and see what pops up in your price range.

On my 998 I saved about $4000 off of what they were going for at the time.

See what there is, then get back to me. There are lots of tips and tricks to make sure you don't get burned on eBay. Generally, best to look for low mileage bike that a seller is getting rid of for a legit reason.

Here is eBay search under "Ducati"

Here is the search term "Ducati red" a narrower search:

Here is "Ducati red supersport"

There are some members in here who swear by eBay, others who would not buy a bike sight unseen. By the way, eBay reports that their BIGGEST sales category is eBay Motors and vehicles. So, I'm not alone.
+1 Got mine from ebay.

Cut to the chase and ...

-Get proof of the title and insurance and a pic of the VIN (ties the VINS together and increases legitimacy).
-Call the insurance co. and verify the information.
-Call the vehicle licensing department (or whatever they call it in that state) of the state the bike is registered in and cross check the vin with the owner. Ask if its a rebuilt, or salvage, blah blah blah. They are usually very helpful especially if you offer up the information first. If the bike was purchased on a loan then it becomes a bit harder to prove because banks usually don't give ANY information on any of their customers but again the insurance will prove this one way or the other (loan=insurance). The customer usually has to authorize the bank to give out information.

Run away from anyone who can't pass that test.

That is just the beginning....
Then get some people to inspect the bike for you if you're too far away or request lots of pics or even a video (with that days newspaper in view).
Then worry about winning the auction or hitting the "Buy it now" button.
Then worry about picking it up.

HAHA, brings back memories when I went to pick up my bike. :)

Most legitimate sellers won't mind sending you information about the bike. If they're not helpful, then you probably won't want to do business with them anyway.

eBay works great, but you still have to do your homework.

Oh, if you create a plan up front (financial and logistical) you won't miss any critical issue and your transaction and pickup should be smoother. I missed getting a hitch and ball for the UHaul trailer. Luckily, there was a Lowes nearby. It could have been a showstopper for me :)

It's no longer mine. It belongs to Kevin K. in Oakland. I believe he put it out to the Ducati.net list. As for pics, my program does not allow me to resize pics so this site won't accept them. So, I'm afraid those who are interested will have to contact me personally for either a pic or Kevin's contact info. I can elablorate on the bike though. It has been painted black and has a Sharkskinz CR fairing and a Sargent seat w/tricolore. It also has Race Tech fork springs, bar end mirrors, and new Pilot Sports. Estimates (not dyno'ed) are that it makes 85-90 rwhp. I can tell you it is a kick-ass bike and I only sold it because "technically" my ex-wife was entitled to half it's value and wanted cash.

A friend has a 2000 Falco. Believe me, that is one helluva bike. It will do anything a SS will do and has a stronger motor. The only downside is that gas mileage is in the 35-42 mpg range. My SS were usually about 5 mpg better. The Falco is the best kept secret in street bikes.

Hi bruce19,

I'm very familiar with the Falco. I agree it is an awesome bike. A friend of mine has one and I've ridden it many times. It is also excellent on the track. That motor is the same Rotax motor as in the Mille just tuned differently. I will also consider a falco if I can find one in great shape and has been well taken care of.
900 ss

I have a 900 supersport 2001 7k miles carbon pipesthat i will sell for 4200. I will also include a new set of tires and a new clutch.
